ok, ive been noticing daisy ( maltese-bichon mix 5 months old) has been really itching her back leg area and also her bottom but doenst seem to be her butt or private area. just back part of her butt. she will itch and then play and then stop and itch and shes been doing this off and on for a month or so maybe longer and i just havnet noticed. I dont see any fleas on her and she was at the vets a few weeks ago and was checked also she had no fleas- he was doing a puppy wellness check up so he went over everything on her- last night was i was watching her to see exactly where she is itching it seemed to look like she was yanking her hair with her teeth right on top where her butt and tail meet. its only these few areas that ive noticed she itches not any where else. ive looked her over and i cant see anything in her hair that woulc cause her to be so itchy but she does this all day it seems. and benltey itches but not no where near what daisy does but did notice bentley started being itchy also. ok where should i start to figure out what is causing this? and no i didnt bring this up to the vet when we were there i forgot about it at the time dealing with her being dewormed and testing neg for coccida.
i have used the same shampoo on her nothing has changed i forgot what its called but it was a newer shampoo and conditioner at petsmart and it was 15.00 a bottle so i thought it wuold be good . i do know its green- and i rotate with a whiting shampoo on them both . to brighten their coats. they get a bath about every other week it ends up to be about every 10 days or so. they do get dingy and dirty smelling and not so white any mroe after a few days after their bath.
i do know over washing can dry them out but im not thinking that this is the cause. is there some thing i can use that will stop the itching? should i run to petsmart and get a oatmeal shampoo for itch? i thought i read some where that oatmeal shampoo is good for itching? am i wrong? no food changes- the only thing differnt with daisy is that she was just dewormed a week ago but this itchness was before this but seems to have gotton alot worse. i dont notice it to be more bothersome any certain time durning the day but at night when were in bed she will sit there for a good 10 min just itching it seems and will stop what shes doing and just start scratchng herself and as i mentioned some times looks like shes yanking on her hair because its itching her so much. what could this be? yes she does have a recheck at the vet in a few days and i will bring this up. what are other signs of allergies wouldnt there be more to allergies tho then itching?
hubby keeps asking me if i rinse out all the shampoo and conditioner which of coarse i do. and i rreally havent noticed if after their bath if its better for a rew days which now i will watch that. they are due for a bath could it be shes just itchy from needing a bath? is there some good shampoo i should try and use that tonight and see if works? please any sujestions would help- i feel so bad for her - thanks a bunch... theresa
i asked my vet about how often was ok to give baths and he told me once a week would be fine- i give them a bath about every 10 days- they do get smelly and yes tear stains and their hair feels ucky not soft and is hard to comb so then they start matting. they just feel tacky i guess and also they are white so there feet turn a yellow and also the bottom half of them which i assume is from pee- yuck they seem so much happier when they have a bath they are clean and white and smell wonderful and i can get a comb threw their hair and they arent all matted and smelly-
no they havnet just had baths they are due for one- i was going to go to petsmart and get some oatmeal shampoo and give them a bath tonight to see if this helpes with them itching. yes maybe it is the dry air in the house. when daisy goes out to go potty it seems she spends more time sitting there itching then going potty.
if it was just the doffie smell i could and would deal with it they dont stink they just dont smell nice and clean. but they turn a yellow - and i have tried those wipes and they dont seem to work. they have long hair and its just hard to keep them looking clean and healthy looking with out giving them a bath every week to 10 days. and i have done this since bentley was 7 weeks old when i got him and hes use to it and lvoes his baths but i have cut down to not giving them a bath till 10 days or so and then hubby is on me to give them a bath. and it makes me wonder how 2 inside dogs can get so dingee from playing in side and they of coarse do go out side but there is snow out there - but the yellow is pee i know that.
and also nope, no flea collars or flea anything- they have never had fleas. the only thing differnt as i mentioned what daisy just was dewormed and also had her second booster shots about 2 weeks ago now if that- but she was itchy before this but the past week its gotton really bad.
maybe i dont rinse out the shampoo and conditioner very well? i swear i thought i did but maybe i dont- gosh everything runs threw your head when your giong crazy trying to figure out whats wrong with your baby-
and yes they do need to go to the groomers and get hair cuts- but daisy just got her booster she needed - she was way behind in her vaccines because of her being sick- now all she needs is her rabbies and shes done oh and i also will have her get the bordella ( kennel cough) as i did for bentley. i do trim their hair around their bottoms myself and around their eyes- iwell call it the kramer hair cut ( off sienfeild) lol they both ahve the crazy sticking up hair on top just like kramer.. hehe' poor puppies...
well off to petsmart to find some good oatmeal shampoo i wonder if the make it also with whitting? they both need whitting shampoo- it really does bring them back to a crispy white instead of a yellow color. thanks for all the help theresa
One more thing, since they aren't on the flea preventative... if they ingest a flea, they could get worms.
You might "see" a flea, but flea bites will look like a tiny rash, or little red dots. May need to spread the hair in order to see them. The area you are describing, is where they can commonly be found...
Ticks can also become some nasty, costly little buggers.
Im pretty sure they dont have fleas. they are white dogs and i can find a grain of dirt in their coats- but as i mentioned they both were just at the vet like 2 weeks ago well not even that long but the vet did go threw and check daisys hair and ears and all of that- it was her puppy wellness appt. no ticks . so im pretty sure we dont have fleas or tickes. but trust me i did go searching to see if i could find anything that wuold be making her itch so bad-
well update- went to petsmart and got some oatmeal shampoo and gave daisy a nice warm bath and scrubbed her up good- so far no itching- just a nice soft, white , good smelling dog.. and also bentley had a bath also and no itching with him either. he never itched like daisy did tho. so maybe the oatmeal is soothing her skin? or maybe she had something in her coat that was irriating her? maybe she was just dirty? but like i said shes always itched but the past week its been crazy itching . i thought at first she was itching her butt- but watched her and seen it wasnt her butt it was her inner leg and alot on top of her butt not her private like i thought. i thought maybe it was worms but she was just dewormed and the vet never saw any worms he just treated her becuase she tested neg for coccida but still has diarhea and was throwing up when at the vets office. we go back in a few days for blood work and find out what is going on with her. poor thing she never catchs a break-
