We recently got a male barn cat (Barney) who's going to the vet for the very first time tomorrow at 7 months old. We've never had a cat before, so please excuse our ignorance. Is there anything other than vaccinations, fecal testing and speuter that we should be concerned/talk to the vet about? Thanks!
Only other thing I can think of is preventative treatment for fleas and ticks. The Vet will check him to see if he has any now. I love the brands that last for three months or so after a skin application. Before those came about, I always worried about my cats strangling on their flea collars when they would try to get them off. Good luck.
I think as far as vets appts you got it covered. Please tho do not put a flea collar on your new kitty those things can be down right fatal to cats. Ask your vet about a good topical flea preventative. Have you thought about what you plan to feed?
if he is going to be a barn cat then he should be tested for feline leukemia and feline aids , FELV/FIV test. if he is positive, then he either needs to make the transition to being an indoor cat only, or he should be put down so he cannot spread the diseases to other cats in the area.
if the tests come back that he does not have either one, then he should be vaccinated with the leukemia vaccine but i strongly recommend that he not get the aids vaccine.
