My roomate just bought a Schnauzer from a breeder yesturday, and I was looking at the folder her breeder gave her and I found something sooo stupid! The breeder gave a sheet of the puppy's family tree, and it has the names of the parents ALL THE WAY down to the GREAT GREAT GRANDPARENTS!! Why do they do that?? Why do we need to know the names of all those dogs? It's not like the names will tell anything about the well-being of the puppy, or is there?? Anyways, I jsut thought that was rediculous.
Its called a pedigree. And yes, breeders do give these out with the pup to show its lineage. Pet owners generally only like it to look at all the different names. But in a breeder world, the lines are an important aspect of the puppy.
Yep it is very important when researching dogs, I know most Shiba-Inu breeders, the big ones and the ones that have been breeding them for a long time, anyhow, and I look at pedigrees of dogs all the time. I know what breeders I agree with their breeding practices, which ones were breeding outside of conformation colors, what types they breed.
Should the dog get some genetic disease, then they can trace the origin through the pedegree, if the dog that is the baerer is still in use for breeding they won't use it anymore. (serious breeders) also if you want to show the dog you need the pedagree when you show, it tells you that the dog is pure bred. If the dog is used to breed then the papers are needed also to secure purebred breeding.
If it helps I can recite five generations on each of my dogs save one (and only because I can't pronounce all of the names well) in under a minute.
The pedagree of a dog is *very* important and tells people who are into the breed more about the dog then almost anything else does. They are not to be scoffed at. Just because you do not understand it does not mean it is not vital information.
As a breeder of Mini Schnauzers Yes I do give out pedigrees for each one of my puppies that go into a new home it is important for new owners to know the puppies are what they are said to be feel lucky that they gave you one.
The breeder we bought Maggie from gave us her pedigree back 4 generations. I think it's kind of cool, even though we don't show and don't breed. I like knowing where she came from, and if she ever develops any health problems, I can find out if anyone in her family ever had similar problems. It is VERY important to breeders, and I think it should be important to pet owners, as well.
Pedigrees are a good way to show off your pups and make them look better then others. I give a pedigrees which shows all the champions and other titles they had in their line in red. It also contain the color of the parents and their OFA statues. this help people know a little more about their dog even if they are not interested in breeding. It just makes you and your pups look better in the eyes of potential buyers and makes them feel good about their purchase.
