This might be a silly question, but can anyone tell me if the age of when your dog is fixed affects how big they might be? I'm asking because we have a 5 1/2 month old shih tzu and the vet advised us to wait another month or so to get him neutered because he still has his baby teeth and they're hoping they will be gone before he gets fixed and if they aren't, they will surgically remove them while he is under anethesia. My question is, he is already 8.5 lbs at only 5 1/2 months! I am surprised with how big he is because his parents weren't more than 11 lbs. If he got neutered at a younger age would he not be as big as he is now? Thanks to anyone in advance for their responses!
Neutering does affect some breeds, in as far as muscle mass goes. It's more obvious in large/giant breeds than it is in small dogs like shih tzu. Just because your dog's parents were 11 lbs this does not mean your dog won't be bigger (or smaller) as an adult. Just as it is possible for two short humans to have a child that is several inches taller than both parents, you can see the same in dogs. It all has to do with the size/genetics of the parents, grandparents, great grand parents, etc. This is why it's important to know as much as you can about a dog's pedigree.
Either way, I have to agree. Unless you want to pay to put your pup under anesthesia twice, I'd hold off on neutering him until he looses his teeth or is 6+ months old.
Never trust a tall dwarf... he's lying about something.
According to our vet, if you neuter a male young, he will not develop into a "male" looking dog. She says they will stay smaller and more feminine looking becuase you are removing the male hormone. So, my guess would be that your dog may stay smaller if he is neutered at a younger age.
early s/n mess up with the normal hormones production that tell the bones to stop growing so the bones keep growing for few more months then they should resulting in taller dogs. it can also cause the hair to grow longer and thicker then it should in intact dogs in some breeds. they will also have smaller genitals.
well i got my dog nuetered at the Animal Cruelty society were i volunteer and he was 5 1/2 month chihuahua. I think u can have ur dog neutered by the age of 4 month even a little younger. Male dogs that are neutered before 5 months dont usually pee with their legs up. Neutering a male dog before 6 months can prevent marking and testicular cancer and they stay sweet and like a puppy. the same goes for girls it prevents mammary gland cancer and ovarian cancer. im pretty sure nuetering doesnt affect the dogs growth
