What should my expectations be on my new lille Bridgett as far as her sleeping in her crate at night. Last night she cried and cried and I felt so bad. I would pick her up to reassure her and then put her back in. I know with my sheltie pups they were find at 8 weeks. How long she I let her cry for. I have her in the bedroom with me at night in her crate. Advice?? Thanks again for all your support Nancy
My initial response would be that she was removed from her littermates with no transition (which isn't uncommon - not many breeders think about the fact that puppies get attached to each other). She probably misses having company. I agree with the idea of putting an old t-shirt in her crate/kennel with her that smells like you. She'll find it comforting. If she wasn't "weaned" from her siblings before she left she will need 3-4 nights at least to get used to being alone.
Having a puppy that small is a totally different experience. I think you and she will have to learn together... :) Just be patient with her. Every puppy is different and needs a different kind of love.
The more you go in there to get her...the more she will cry for you to get her. I know that she will have to go potty and what not, but maybe at night for a while you can use a potty mat (that is what I do with Addley, she uses a litter box during the day and a potty mat at night).
But if you go in there to reassure her all the time, she knows that if she cries...you will go in there and pick her up. That is a hard habit to break and one that I had to be careful not to do...they are so cute that you just want to cuddle with them when they cry! But it will be worth it in the end.
