Not all desinger dogs come from puppy mills. We run a 40 acre all animal resue in the FL panhandle. We give our resues away. No charge at all, no matter how much their vet bills run. If we know what breed the parents of a puppy are, we list them as desinger dogs or hybreds. Whatever works to get the puppies into good, loving homes. Some people don't want a pure breed, but they do want to know the mix & it makes the puppy seem special to them if they can say "I have a desinger dog". As long as the dog gets a good home who cares what the pup is called. So why be so defensive about people calling the dog by something better than mutt. It's still a dog that needs love & attention.
Because...calling a dog something that is commonly used to describe clothing is disgusting. Not only that, but if people are willing to call their dogs designer dogs to make them seem better, they probably aren't going to bother to tell other people not to buy these dogs from people who produce them.
Call it what it is. If you want a dog breed, then get a dog breed. Don't make it seem like it is okay to breed dogs so randomly like this.
And honestly, this topic does not need another thread. There's too many as it is, and nothing new is going to be said here that you didn't read on the other thread.
giving dogs away is a scary thought. are you aware of all the scum out there that pretend to be loving homes, and all they are interested in is taking your free dogs or puppies and selling them to class b dealers who in turn sell them to laboratories ?
please google the documentary DEALING DOGS. it aired on HBO quite awhile ago, THAT is where your FREE dogs and puppies are going !!!!
better yet google CC BAIRD ..... he was what that documentary was all about. if that is not enough to convince you to charge something for these poor animals.... then i dont have anything left to say on the subject.
Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.
well said scout. It makes me cringe every time I see an add "free to good home." It is a dangerous practice and not only do such pets run the risk of ending up in labs but they also run the risks of ending up as bait for fighting dogs; I am surprised that in this day and age people are still unaware of the dangers in giving dogs or animals away for free. There are people out there who run dog fighting rings and they are always on the look-out for animals that they can acquire for free in order to train their pitbull or fighting dog to attack and if they have acquired a large dog then they tie it up and throw it at their dog and encourage it to attack, if it is a smaller dog or animal that they have acquired for free they often place it in a sack and suspend it in mid-air and encourage their fighting dog to jump and grab. I am forever trying to educate people on these risks and I have lost count of the number of people that I have emailed with information alerting them to these risks.
Sadly we are well aware of that. There are many people who like to call themselves breeders producing mixed breed dogs.
It is NEVER a good idea to give a dog away free of charge. It makes it way too easy for people to use them for something other than being a pet. Very risky business if you ask me. Not only are they sold to labortories but also as bait dogs for dog fighters.
There is nothing wrong with "mutts". I can understand people wanting to know the breeds involved (if known) but if you are against the term mutt then prehaps mixed breed would be a better way of putting it.
If someone needs to "feel better" about having just a mutt - then I dare say that that is not the dog for them. If they feel the need to say "I have a designer dog" then I dare say that they don't need a dog. Period.
The type of owners that I would be targeting are those that "just want a dog" - want a friend, a pal, an addition to their family. Someone whose biggest concern is the huggability of the dog...
Giving them away is scary... basically what you have is someone looking for a "designer dog" at bargain basement prices... ummm... doesn't work.
"It's a dog-eat-dog world out there... and I'm wearing milk bone underpants"
