(quick update) when i got daisy (maltese-bichon mix) at the end of october 06- took her to the vet after i got her and she had coccida- well she had this coccida for over a month and kept giving meds ect- finially she tested neg for coccida but still had/has diahrea- KInda left it at that for a few weeks and then a few weeks ago took her back for her boosters and also brought a stool sample thinking she has coccida still because of the diarhea- she tests neg again- So i ask the vet is this normal her having diarhea gosh basically since i got her oct 29th and he said no- so he gave me the meds to deworm her which we did - even tho he didnt see any worms but siad that most times you dont see any signs of worms - thinking this might help or could be the cause- well i dont know if she did have worms but she still has diarhea- the past few days seems to be getting more watery- getting worse. How many times do you have to deworm a pup? will one time ( she took one dose for 3 days) The vet said that if this didnt clear up the diarhea then he wanted to do some blood work on her to find out what is going on- something that has been over looked . I did switch vets, i wasnt getting anywhere with the first one i was taking daisy to, so i started taking her back to banfeild (petsmart) as i have always taken bentley there with good results and they are very nice. Could it be she just has a senstive stomach? but would that be to easy? no food has changed, nothing at all to get the diarhea to worsen. and yes there are some days its not as watery, i give her kapekate (sp) for the diahrea so some times it does help and will harden it some what. I just dont know what this could be that is causing this? she eats fine, very active, she doesnt act sick. she drinks tons of water tho. i have a prety big water bowl and she drinks about one and half a day most days and pees alot- bentley hardly drinks any water as his pee is bright yellow when he pees and daisys is a clear water..lol would this or could this have anything to do with it? of coarse i mentioned to the vet but so far he hasnt brought anything up about it- wanted to have her spayed this month (jan) but with all thats going on were holding off till after the blood work so the vet can find out if he can find out whats wrong/ what do they test for in blood work tho? what causes cronic diarhea? and also it has the worse smell ever- this is why i thought for sure its still coccida as when she had that the smell would knock you on your butt- same thing but tested 2 times neg for coccida- im worried that maybe something is really wrong? or really cronic diarhea isnt anything that bad? she isnt dehydrated - as i mentioned she drinks tons of water. and shes gained alot of weight so besides that i would think shes healthy- she was 2 pounds when i got her oct 29 and 2 weeks ago at her vet appt she weighed 8 pounds. shes a big girl..lol any one know what i should be asking the vet? what tests should i be asking to be done? what should i be looking for and asking the vet to look for? sory so long but really im just at wits end with worrying whats wrong with daisy and why we cant get this to go away-... theresa
Theresa, what brand of food is your pup eating. Some foods can be too rich and cause diahrea, or loose bowels. Let the vet do a full blood panel, tell him to make sure it will involve anything that they look for when they do it prior to surgery too. It is always wise to do the bloodwork panel before surgery to be assured all the organs are working properly , being you are going to be spaying right. A good vet asks if you want this done prior to surgery. To make sure their body can handle anesthisia. Aside from that, try giving a spoon full of canned plain pumpkin per meal. It will help firm up the poo. Its also good for constipation.
Whoever said you can't buy happiness, must have never owned a dog!!!!!!!!!!!
hello, daisy has been eating iams and wellness dog food. the diarhea has been going on since i got her, the vet doesnt think its the food, it was even when i was doing the low residue food the vet put her on-
yes of coarse i will have all blood work done prior to spaying her- bentley which was neutered also had the blood work done before hand- i was just wondering what they look for when they do blood work? what can they find? i was wondering if there was something that would cause cronic diarhea? the vet also gave me meds ( forgot the name) that is for diarhea in dogs but it doesnt seem to help as much as human kaopekate- but still isnt 100% effective. i just worry that something could be wrong that has been over looked for months. this is what worries me-
The vet didnt really say much just thought we should try deworming her to see if it helped- but it didnt. so now he wants to do blood work. i have tried the pumkin but really didnt help as much as the other things the vet told me to give her. I will keep searching the internet for maybe something that will help me figure out whats going on with her-. thanks for the help and advice..... theresa
you said you were giving her Iams & Wellness. Mixed together? Why the Iams? I know it isn't really that great of food. Have you tired giving her cooked chicken and rice? I know a lot of people use that, I'm not keen on any grains..but it might help..I'd stick with just a premium food with not a lot of ingredients and see if that helps..It almost sounds like an allergy to something in the food.
ive been doing both dog foods hoping to get her off the iams and just the hard wellness food but she still like the soft iams and also my other dog eats ceaser which is crap i know but the only food he would eat- trust me i tried every thing for months and months and came across this on vacation when i forgot a can opener for his food and it was the first time ever since getting him that he ate all his food so i just stuck with it even tho its crappy but hes healthy so i guess thats all that counts so daisy will also get into the ceaser and always has nothing new - but im trying to get her just on to the wellness but of coarse she eats a few pieces here and there threw out the day- trust me i would love to find a good food they both like- but its hard when youve tried everything it seems and have a cupboard full of bags and cans of high dollar food and they dont like it- yes i often do the rice and chicken and also rice and boiled hambuger per my vets request, and for the longest time i would still put rice and boiled burger in with her soft food but it didnt really help i thought maybe it filled her belly up more but i weaned off that but i just made some more rice to try again and see if it would help any and hasnt. ( i know chicken is better i guess from what i read on here but my vet told me to use boiled sirlon burger- way less fat) so i do both and do one mix one week and the other the following-
Yes i did get on line and found out alot obout cronic diarrhea and there are many things that could cause this- i do hope it isnt serouis- But i do worry- thanks again for your help and advice- Im starting to wonder if its maybe to much protien? i read some on that but i would think the vet would tell me to switch foods and he never has and knows also that daisy eats the crappy ceaser food also- but has since i got her so it istn something that just started. she likes the stuff even tho i try to keep her away but i some times will put iams in with it and rice to try to make it some what healhier- it is hard to feed to differnt dogs 2 differnt foods when they eat together and drink together- Daisy is always going to be in bentleys dish and he is in hers- dont know why i have always fed all my animals soft food- my cat also is on soft cat food but has hard food also and both dogs are on soft food but have hard food to eat at all times - the wellness- i dont think they care for it tho./ I need to find someting they both like and that is really good for them- even tho they both gain weight and arent over weight and bentley is very healthy and i have never had any problems with him at all and hes a small dog about 7 pounds if that and he just turned a year old hes a bichon-toy poodle mix and is very smart- he way more advanced at daisys age then she is now - he caught on to thing very quickly and still does and daisy takes awhile to catch on- i think its the poodle in bentley- very smart and very loving- daisy isnt as loving as bentley either- bentley will lay with you all day on the couch and cuddle up and daisy will sit there for a minute and want down to go lay by herself some where- I try to give her more attention to maybe get her to be more loving but she only can take a few minutes of holding and petting and shes had enough- wonder why??
hi i have a basset hound that has had the same problem in the past.i too tried everything finally the only thing i found was i compared my food to a different brand. mine was really high in fiber the new was lower. i switched, and the problem went away. probibly sounds stupid, but it might be something to look into if the bloodwork doesn't show anything!!! GOOD LUCK!
I have heard the same thing as tammyh about looking at the fiber in the food. I have also read to watch the fat content since it doesnt agree with some pups stomach.
Here is the info for Wellness Puppy: Crude Protein (minimum) 28 Crude Fat (minimum) 17 Moisture (maximum) 11 Crude Fiber (maximum) 5
While Chase does not have diarrhea he has never had a solid stool since I got him....until I reduced how much I was feeding him. I feed Innova Puppy and was feeding the max for his age/weight. I also watch how much I give him treat wise for that seemed to contribute (until I switched to giving liver as my training treat).
as mentioned, the treats can have a BIG factor inloose stool as mentioned. we feed an off brand dog foor, compairable to purina. i know alot of people feed big names, but we have 5 basset hounds 2 yellow labs, and 2 westies, plus the other animals on the place + three growing boys, so we tried to find an inexpensive brand that agreed with everyone. and all see to stay fat and happy off of it. it has 21% protien 10% fat and 4.5% fiber. The dog that i have had trouble can not have over this amount of fiber or LOOK OUT!!!
If it is the wellness puppy, then i would think it is the protein which seems high to me. I have a Bichon Frise, who is very sensitive to foods and changes. I know the more canned food she gets..the looser her bowels are. If Daisy has been on the wellness for a while now...have you thought of getting rid of both canned and trying to mix something else to get them to eat? I've used, unsweetened applesauce, yogert(sp), peas & carrots, low sodium cream of chicken soup. Just enough to coat the food.
I've been reading your problems with her..and if you've been using the canned since you got her, and the problem is still on going, I'd really look into that. I'm no expert in anyway....I know that my dog usually won't eat anything unless it is mixed with something, except Canidae. She loved it, but she licked her feet all the time when on it. I now have her on Natures Variety, grain free, dry. She is doing great on that and will eat it without mixing something into it.
It can't hurt at this point to not use the canned for a few weeks and use just something else. If they are both healthy, other than the bowel problem...which means she isn't exactly healthy, she really can't get any worse.
