Well it says that it is 8 degrees out, but with the wind-chill we must be below zero. It is supposed to be in the single digits or less through next Friday. We are supposed to have the worst weather since 1986, and a huge blizzard on Monday.
Tommorrow we are going to get enough dog food to last at least 2 weeks, just in case. Right now I am stressing out on if we lose power for more than a day or two. I don't know how we would heat the house, water the dogs, or keep my puppies warm.
I would definately be calling in some chips with friends if need be, but what if the roads are so bad I couldn't get to them? Rescue 911?
We heat with oil, but the furnace has an electric blower. We have a back up wood stove, but that has an electric blower too. I guess I am going to cross my fingers that we live close enough to town that the power won't go off or at least for that long. Maybe we should buy a kerosene heater tomorrow.
It was so cold tonight I went out to the barn and gathered up all the barn cats and put them in a dog crate in the house. It is normally warm enough in there, but I don't think I could have slept good knowing they were out there freezing. The boxers are not amused. They don't even want to go out to go potty.
I hope that every one thinks or cares enough to bring in their animals tonight.

wow, here to... way cold. must be same area, storm monday and way cold. below zero and the coldest its been in like 10+ years. and i can feel it. i have a chill in my bones i cant shake and gosh going out side with my pups is soooooo cold even with their lil jackets on they shake and just stand there they are so cold. i brought them both down to the basment with potty pads and they are looking at me like what am i suppose to do with that? i dont think its going to work as i hoped i was thinking of them, its just way to cold out there.
the ground hog didnt see his shadow today, so spring is on the way i hope?????????
here with wind chill it was -5 this morning. dont worry about the power, honestly its not that bad. Im a total city girl I have never gone with out power befor. our fire place is gas with a eletric turn on, our water heater is gas, and our heater is a gas furnace but it wont turn on with out eletric I have not figured out why.
we lost our power a few weeks ago it was out for almost a week. we got tons of candles, a lot of easy make food, put blankets blocking off all the rooms from the living room and pulled out the bord games. When i woke up and found no eletric I was freezing. being a total wad I go into the living room were my brother and a friend are sitting and flip the fire place switch and said something so gay its not funny. My brother and van stared at me. Some how the fire place turned on and belive me we didnt tempt turning it off just to see. the blower to the fire place didnt work but with all the blankets we stayed warm. Not as warm as we usualy like to be but warm enough to be happy.
When the power came on i was kinda sad. We had alot of fun playing bord games and card games and playing with our airsoft guns and stuff like that.
Our dogs and cat were fine. rocky would go in the bed room with me and mike (it was between 40 and 50 in there) and we would cuddle and go to sleep. Bullwinkle stayed in the living room because he still sleeps in a crate. we had some friends stay with us because there power was off too and they didnt have any kind of heat not even a fire place. Our kids went to stay with hubbys mom and dad because even with the heat it was still kinda cold and if they had somewere nice and warm to stay I didnt think it was fair to make them stay with us.
All in all this city girl who hides during bad stormes did ok during the power being out and im sure you will be ok too. Just do what we did and you shoudl ahve enough heat, The more people in the house the more heat so feel free to invite everyone over for bord games and a sleep over.
I'm gonna trade this life for fortune and fame I'd even cut my hair and change my name
BAHHH I got you all beat with the wind chill we are below fraking 40 that is -40 folks, it doesnt mater weather you are Fahrenheit or Celsius -40 is -40. You know what that translates too, COLD yes very very very cold and topped off with more cold, and snow, and then some cold.
my poor dogs wont even go outside. I have to carry them out and then hope they hurry up and then carry them back in because they are crying because their little paws are sooo cold. Im going to petsmart today to find some snow socks or something for their feet. Even with their coats on they freeze, i know i do and i have a sweatshirt and my husbands carhart coat on boots and gloves and i want to lay down and die out there..lol And then i wonder about all the homeless ppl and hope to god they are warm. I cant even be out side for 10 minutes right now and for homeless ppl to be out side and never have a warm place really bothers me. Every cold day i think about them. Ive never seen any in our area, but they have had news things on that says our area has hundreds of homeless ppl- But im sure their are differnt kinds of homeless, like living on the street homeless or living in shelters homeless, and then also all the pets that ppl keep out side and dont even care about them. still i think back gosh years and years ago about this commerical that use to be on when i was a kid, this family comes over to a uncles house for a foot ball game or what ever it was but the kids asked what happend to that cute puppy you use to have and he said it isnt a puppy anymore and they show the dog tied up to a dog house in the winter time- and then ask to please keep your dogs in side when the weather gets cold- im sure im off on alot of it but this is what i remember it to be. very sad-
Do dogs with more fur, handle the cold weather better? older dogs better then pups? well my pups are 1 year and 5.5 months old still babies to me- But this cold really takes a toll on them, mainly their little paws-
Yep! -16 before the wind chill (-45 with wind chill)here in SD. My Siberians run out side to go potty and right back in. My garage cat(heated garage) goes out the kitty door and right back in and uses the litter box.
The cold even takes your breath away!
alicat1 that is awesome that you brought the barn cats in! I liked that when I read it, I thought it was sweet!

Not so sweet smelling.... they really don't understand about crates, and they didn't go in the little litter-pan thing I made for them. I think I rather roll in dog pee than get cat pee on my hands again :)
This just sucks. We did get enough supplies where I don't have to leave home for a week or more so I feel better. I was freaking out last night.
Boxers are like cookies you can't have just one :)
last night it was 19 below with the wind chill yes i seen that wisconsin was -40 wow! My furance was working over time last night. I always keep my heat set at 67 degrees in the winter some times 66 . Its pretty comfy but last night there was a chill that you just couldnt shake. My poor dogs wouldnt even go outside, I would drag them out and they would stand there by the door not even moving- Back to the potty pads in th basement for now. Dont know what else to do?
Alicat you're in michigan right? Its been crazy here with highways shutting down, police asking drivers to stay off area roads, church services cancelled today, white out conditions... All i have to say is i really really hate snow so much I can't even express it in words!
was 11 degrees when i woke up this morning. now it is a very warm 21 degrees ~ BRRR ~ scout would have stayed out for hours this morning i think. she would not come in, i had to drag her and bribe her with cookies. freak dog lol.
and yes ali ..... cat pee, especially unneutered male cat pee .... is the worse smell on earth =(
Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.
Had a great morning, woke up at 8:30 and it was -27 WITHOUT the wind chill. We have hit our cold spell, everything is pretty froze even my jeep. New battery and alot of gas.Hope all is well with everybody else!
My Eskies and my Chow mix don't mind the snow and cold. My 4lb Min Pin is not amused at all though. She fights to get back inside as soon as I set her down. She was going to the end of the deck and doing her business (still on the deck, errr)and would come back in crying from her paws being so cold. I hold her until I get her paws warmed back up. Then she started doing her business directly outside the door and now she won't go outside at all. Hurry up Spring!!
Yep, someone from Grand Rapids was supposed to come down and check out my puppies on Saturday morning, but they closed 131.
I really don't even know what to do with the puppies. It is just too cold to put them outside. Even for 5 minutes. I think this is going to be a set-back for the potty training. I have been putting a ton of papers down and they have been doing their business in my kitchen-- better than their crate I guess, but still REALLY CRAPPY for me.... in more ways than one. I really hope this doesn't last past Monday.

How funny Alexnkai.... this is what both my dogs are doing- i feel its a set back for daisy and house breaking her. But what can you do when its sooooooo cold out side that i cant even stand out there longer then a few minutes and im bundled up? they wont even come to the door now i have to carry them out and they stand right on the porch , wanting to come in and doing thier buisness on the porch- ughrr yeah tell me about it- and with daisy it seems i bring her in and she pees on the floor- but i guess last night being 18 below with the wind chill their poor little paws have to get cold fast. they dont have hair on their feet so i wonder if that makes a differnce. Im going to get to petsmart i hope tomororw and find them some boots- im sure the real treat will keeping them on their feet but they love their coats and want to wear them around the house when we come in. So i let them for a few minutes..lol
I set up some potty pads in my basement and bringing them down here to go potty- today does seem to be a touch warmer the wind isnt so strong it was a white out all day and the wind blowing that snow felt like being shot with a bb gun- yes this is the worst time ever to be trying to potty train a pup- Daisy is 5.5 months and she does get off the porch and acts like shes going to do her thing but then runs right back up and holding her paws up, so i pick her up and rub the snow off her feet and then get bentley standing by the door and rub his feet also- they limp in the house till thier feet warm up. the weather man said this is the coldest its been in a long time and all week its looking to be super cold. highs of like 5 degrees but thats not with the wind chill.
little dogs must be so much more sensitive to the cold weather- i never remember any of our dogs growing up being so wimpy to go out side. they did their thing and came back. mine wont even go they are so cold..lol i dont even know what to do?
Oh yeah, i can't imagine having to raise a litter in this weather. What a pain! Its bad enough having to put out my pomeranians for a potty break. Pups would just cry if they got a taste of this cold. To add to the list of cancelations, school is not in session tomorrow. At least not in my area.
