When should I spay isabella. She is very active and loves other dogs. I am spaying her hands down, I'm just not sure how old she needs to be to have it done. If someone could give me guidelines for the age range that would be very helpful
Definatly before her first heat, and i think the typicall is 5-6 months. Although i have heard that some vets will do it as early as 8 weeks. I would think waiting till 5-6 months is better. Although, I would also say talk to your vet and see what they recommend!
I have a 6 month old Shih Tzu and I wish I had been educated enough to know that females can start their first heat cycle at this age. My little girl is approaching the end of her cycle, and now I believe I have to wait at least two months to spay according to my vet.
I usually recommend before the first heat with small/medium breed dogs - so before 6 months unless your breeder can tell you that her line goes into heat later (most of my Sheltie girls don't have their first heats until 12-14 months old). Usually 5 months is a good age.
peanutsmommy - why is your vet making you wait 2 months after her heat to spay her? I know they need to be out of heat, but I would assume 2 weeks after she stops bleeding would be sufficient? Did they give you a reason (I'm curious - not thinking I know more than your vet. I would just like to know why :)?
my vet told me that dogs go into heat between 6-9 months of age, but he would like to spay around 6 months of age and of coarse before the first heat. Daisy is going to be spayed in a few weeks, needs follow up blood work done first and then she will be spayed shortly after, if all is ok. It was very hard for me to have Bentley neutered, i canceled and postponed many appts since he was 6 months and then he finially had it done at 8 months old. I was worried something would happen to him and he is the son i never had.. hehe so i just wasnt to sure about it- I knew i wanted to have him neutered but i didnt want him to have to go threw the pain- But he was fine and acted as if nothing happened. I was a worry wart for nothing, and now its Daisys turn, i hope i dont drag it out for the same reasons- i just feel bad and i hate leaving them there all day and knowing they are in a cage untill its their turn and they arnet crated at home so i think thats what bothers me the most. They told me tho they do give them something to relax them, but still breaks my heart... But it will be done i hope with in a few weeks...
I had Maggie spayed at 5 1/2 months. My vet said most females have their first heat soon after they loose their baby canine teeth (the big chompers!). He said he likes to use that as a guideline, rather than going by age alone.
Thanks for the help guys. I just got back from the vet. Isabella is going to be spayed on the23rd of this month. Say a prayer. I don't know if we can handle her being gone overnight. The vet is going to charge $165.00, is that good. It includes the overnight stay, food, pain meds, and the surgery itself?
