does anyone know what an average heart rate of a 4 month old puppy should be. I am not sure if it depends on breed or not. I am trying to figure out what is wrong with my puppy and I thought this should be one of the things I checked.
What breed is your dog? Larger animals tend to have a slower heart rate. Is your puppy extremely active? And have you gotten him checked by the vet for any problems directly?
I had a Malamute years and years ago who had an extremely fast heart rate, his resting was almost 1.5 times that of what is normal for larger dogs. He also had a lot of what we believed was anxiety problems. He had sort of panic attacks, as best could be described. It didn't help his heart rate at all, it would elevate to more than twice his resting heart rate. He did manage to live to the age of 12-14 (he was a rescue, so that's a guesstimate).
my dog is a mix breed and from what we were told he is lab and jack russell. He has been to the vet and has always been fine. My issue is that tonight I took him to my aunts house and ever since then he has been whining and crying. When I tried to pick him up he growled and he has never done that. He hasn't slept since 1:00 and we have gone on a walk and played for hours. He is very tired but every time he tries to go to sleep he will start whining. My fear is that he got a hold of something at my aunts. She had dropped some pills ealier but thought that she got them all up. I have checked his belly and it is not hard or swollen, and his breathing seems fine besides a little congestion. He was also making these intermittent jerking motions but those have seemed to die down. So...basically I wanted to sww if his heart rate was normal in case he did injest a pill.
You may want to call an emergency vet hotline and describe those symptoms. You may be able to take him in somewhere. Ingesting a pill could kill him, even if the weird acts are calming down now. What kind of pills were they? If it ever happens again, try and induce vomitting if you can. And definitely call a vet and get him checked out immediately. Some pills are harmless in general, but might have horrible effects on individuals.
thank you for your advice ia m monitoring him still, i called my aunt and as far as she can see she has all of her pills, which were muscle relaxers for her ms. I just have a tendency to freak out and call the vet over nothing, which I know is better than not calling and something really being wrong but I was trying to avoid the late night call and call early in the morning, if in fact anyone knew what thesesymptoms might be, or he goes to sleep with no further problems. (of course I will check on him while he is sleeping)
Good luck with him. I've seen some threads in the past on forums about dogs getting into muscle relaxers and being okay. It is just not normal for dogs to take certain kinds, and they have adverse reactions. Most were fine. Luckily, your aunt picked up most, you said, so he probably didn't get enough to really hurt him. I'd let the vet know, still.
