HI....I'm really hoping somebody out there can help me out with potty training our 12 week old Shih tzu puppy Holly.
We got her at 6 weeks of age. We have been Kennel training her up until 1 week ago, when I started leaving her in her playpen during the night. I think I'm confusing the poor girl more than anything. I will give a bit of history and maybe you can tell me what I am doing right and wrong and what else I should maybe do.
We started off with having puppy pads around the house - 2 upstairs and two down - she has seemed to choose one that she prefers to poop on and the other she prefers to only pee on.....the puppy pads were put down for "accidents"...we have and still do take her outside quite often - especially upon waking from a nap or coming out of her playpen (which also has a puppy pad in it). I tried taking the puppy pads away - but she will just pee or poop where the pad should have been. I can take her out for a pee and 5 min later she will go over to the pad and do a little dribble.
The reason why I started leaving her in the puppy playpen during the night instead of her kennel is because the first night last week - she was vomiting and pooping all night - it was easier to keep her contained - she went on the puppy pad - and she wasn't crying being locked in her kennel as she had to go very often - turns out we have a puppy with a sensitive stomach.
Inside of this puppy playpen is her smaller kennel, a bed, toys food (that's a whole other issue) and her water.
Before I started leaving her in her puppy playpen (which I originally bought to put her in when we were all upstairs...I don't want her near my brand new furniture - so this kept her contained, but still around us) I would leave her in a rather large kennel during the day when I worked and during the night. It was big enough for her to move around in and play with her toys - and she wouldn't mess in it. Then I thought the playpen would be better for her during the day as well when I was at work - but then took some time off of work and am home all the time with her - thought maybe it would be a good time to really get her trained....not working so well.
So..there you have some history, perhaps someone can set me straight here and tell me what I am doing right and wrong. I think perhaps I need to put her back in the kennel during the night - (she's been peeing on her pee pad in the am before I get down to take her outside to pee - like I justed missed it - you can tell that she doesn't use her pad during the night).
I look forward to all and any suggestions you have. Thanks.
first we'll start with the puppy pads. if you want your puppy to go to the bathroom outside and ONLY outside you need to take up those puppy pads right now. puppies do not understand that the pads are there only for accidents. seems you have effectively taught her it is ok to potty both outside AND inside.
you need to go back to crate training 101 with her. get rid of the pads so there is no more confusion. it is going to take a lot longer now to re train her than it would have had you picked one place for her to go and stuck with it from the beginning.
just be patient. it will work out but it will take a bit for her to get it now.
Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.
You are really confusing the pup. You need to pick one way to train, like Scout1 said, and stick with only that. If you do that, you and the pup will be a lot happier. There are lots of tips for crate training if you do a google search for it.
