I have a 12 week old Shih tzu....I just had her at the vet last Friday for her 12 week old check up and vacinations. I told the vet that her ears seem itchy, he checked them and said they were fine. She's really itching them now, and makes little noises as she stratches (not sure if it's a shih tzu noise, moan, or if it's hurting her).
Did he miss something?? Could it be mites?? I've heard of people putting oil in dogs ears - is that really true?? What does it do? How do you do it?

Are her ears red on the inside? Is there a lot of "gunk" inside the ears?
Dogs will make a grunting sound while scratching ears. If your dog is scratching often or roughly you might want to go back to the vet. If the ears are red or have lots of gunk that keeps coming back even after cleaning I would suggest another visit.
As far as oil in the ear I wouldn't suggest that. There are ear cleaners available (at pet stores) that are made to be squirted into the dogs ears that help loosen the gunk and bring it out. If your dogs ears are already sore from scratching the solution may sting since there usually is alcohol in it.
If you go to the cosmetic area at walmart/kmart they have cotton pads (rather than cotton balls) that you can wet and try to wipe out the inside of the ear. Try keeping the ears clean for a couple days and if the dog is still bothered take to vet. There might be an infection.
If there is gunk in there, it could be uncomfortable. Clean with dog ear cleaner, make sure there is no ear hair in the canal. Pull anthing IN the canal out in small amounts at a time. Use a product that will kill mites, bacteri, fungus. I swear by Thornit Ear powder.
Whoever said you can't buy happiness, must have never owned a dog!!!!!!!!!!!
