My Jack Russell injured himself in the front right leg and has limped ever since (I watched him tumble and pull up limp). I have taken him to the vet who has x-rayed the leg and told me there is no bone damage. She suggested that I rest him.
I followed this advice and the limp did not get better. Following a second visit she suggested that I restrice him completely. I am not sure if this lady has ever owned a JRT but total restriction of this animal is practically impossible.
Anyway, I have kennelled him during the day, I take him out to do his business and then put him back in the kennell. At night I let him sit withh me on the couch but restrict him from playing.
The limp still does not seem to be improving and it is concerning me. I will continue resting him as I may not have given him enough time yet.
My question is: Has anyone had this issue before? Is there any other specialist I can go to for this type of injury? If I do need to keep resting him does nayone have any tips for keeping him restrcited in his movement (he jumps five feet in the air everytime I let him out of the cage).
Any advice will be much appreciated. Thanks, Jason.
I seriously suggest another opinion, from a totally different vet. If the limping is not getting better, it seems to me this particular vet isn't quite concerned enough. I know the answer of "rest" wouldn't sit well for me if it was one of my own babies.
I would get another opinion soon, because if there is damage that was overlooked.. and the leg/bone heals that way. That can cause serious and painful trouble later.
If no bone injury, maybe a pulled tendon or muscle. Some dogs remember the pain and will not purposely walk on it normally because they fear the pain. Now with your dog always jumping he could be re-injuring it each time. I believe there are certain harnesses that you can put on your dog that will keep them from jumping. Just an option. Or the good ole crate, big enough to only allow him to stand and turn. It would be good to train him to be goo in one.
Whoever said you can't buy happiness, must have never owned a dog!!!!!!!!!!!
