The other day I washed my little maltese Lily who will be 11 months old this Sunday. She hates baths so she got so excited to be finished with all the blow drying and brushing she ran so fast and I heard a huge yelp and her right hind leg was held up in the air. I called the vet and immediatly brought her to his office. He said that she has a luxating patella and that 70% of small dogs have it and that it can be fixed with surgery. However she is still too young. He said to keep her calm let her rest which is not hard to do because she is always laying down in the corner not wanting to be bothered. It happened 3 times in 3 days. Just now it happened and she didnt yelp very loud just a little squeak. I went over to her and massaged it back into place. I felt it go back in. I called the vet twice and he keeps telling me that its no big deal and that I'm "TOO NUTTY" over her. But to me its a big deal shes not herself and I'm really upset over this I don't want her to be misrable and in pain. I really need good advice from people who love their animals just as much as I do. I would be sick if anything bad happened to her. PLEASE I'M DESPERATE.

I'm sorry about your baby!

I would say, If you're really not satisfied with the answer that vet gave you.. get another opinion. It couldn't hurt. If they say the same thing, about her age.. suggest some pain medicine for the little baby. That would at least take the edge off.

Not a problem at all. I know there are actually some vet techs on this board who can give you more info. Unfortunately, I am not. I know there's certain people medicines you can give her until you can get to a new vet, just to take the edge off like I said. I'm not exactly sure which ones though, so I do not want to give fault info. Maybe Icyhound or Minniyar can help you. :)

Our vet put my girl on anti-inflamitories for 10 days to see if any swelling and whatnot would go down and solve the problem. You should see about doing that.
For us, (My Lilly, whom is in my avatar), her knee was popping out at least a dozen times everyday. I could not allow her to live like that. I figured I was already having to keep her calm, and might have to do it for many weeks anyways, so our vet and I decided, the best thing to do was to operate.
It did fix the problem. Put her on glucosmine-chondroitant. It helps the joints.
But see if the vet will prescribe anti-inflams. Perhaps that will help with any pain.

My eldest has arthritis, but since it can be helpful for other things, and being your dog has things problem, its worth trying. I am probably going to try it.

I just ordered this a few minutes ago. It is actually safer than the typical steriods and other meds given by vets. It does not have the after affects that meds can do to your dog. I was talking to a friend online who is very smart by the way, she has delved into natural remedies and had nothing but good to say about yucca. Age wise if your dog needs meds, its best I think if its natural.
Do your own research, ask around. Thats what I did.
Here this is what the gal I know told me,

I have a wonderful little book by Dr John Heinerman.."Natural pet cures"...which offers natural suggestions to common pet ailments...
he mentions yukka with other antiinflammatory plants in the relief of pain and joint stiffness for dysplasia and arthritis....also mentioned are alfalfa powder,flaxseed oil,liquid aged garlic extract,marshmallow root,yucca and licorice.
...he suggests a capsule of yucca every other day,in combination with wheat germ oil(flaxseed oil if sensitive to wheat)and a vitamin B complex.
...in another case history yucca is used with alfalfa to help hip dysplastic dogs....with good success.
I assume this is for Lily?It cannot hurt to try.
Just the other day I used echinacea(on myself) as a last resort for a persistant bronchitis/sore throat problem.The very next day i actually felt much better...I was very impressed.In the past,I have used the echinacea to treat Chelsea's mouth ulcers....it did seem to help healing. I have high respect for some of these remedies...but remember they are potent and should be used with care.

absolutely get the glucosimine, chondroiten, msm. It cured my guys luxating patella. he tore the ACL which is probably what yours did. The vet could feel it. I put him on a very low dose of pred ( 2 1/2 mgs everyother day ) & the combo. It took about 5 monthes for him to go from not being able to walk at all to running full speed. The resting is very important. I did not push him at all. He just did every thing in his own time. The vet could feel that it went back to normal. He doesn't even limp now. Honestly, I believe all dogs should be on it for life.

Oh and thanks for all of your feedback. It really helped me a lot. It feels good to know I'm not the only one going through this. I also did some research about my vet. He didn't bother to X-ray a cat whose owner brought him in because he was limping and had diarrhea, according to state records. It turned out the cat had bone cancer. He was put on probation in 2003 and fined $1,500 after admitting he misdiagnosed two animals in his care. Now I am on the hunt for a good vet in the Brooklyn, New York area. If anyone knows of any please let me know.

Good for you....... I have to say also, my oldest poodle has had arthritis for a few years now, about three years ago, her kneecap was popping out. She is not a real active dog, so this was something that could slow her down h=even more.
I had her to specialists and everything. It came down to, her knee joint had nearly NO catrlidge left. Vet said surgery would be useless. They have no knee cartlidge replacements like they do for humans. I was already giving gluc-chondr. Ithen added MSM, Honestly it stopped the knee from popping.
Soooo before any surgery start the gluco-chond.w/ msm. It takes weeks to get into the system. It does not matter what her age is. Some people do give human products. Its ok. Some are harder to administer, and hard to gauge how much to give. Missing Link has a good dog product. Some swear by Cosequin. I use a product very similar to Missing Link, produced in Hawaii, but harder to find. Just so happens, our local store does. I add MSM powder to it. Which you can buy separate if need be. I need to get another tub of it.

Ok so I brought her to the new vet. She has between grade 2 and grade 3 luxation in her back right leg. He told me to keep her in a playpen till next saturday and keep her movement RESTRICTED. He put her on .18 of Metacam. He said that the few things that she has going for her is that it was probably traumatic since she jumped out of the bed and that it would be possible since she is young, strong and healthy that it could heal with time and medication. SO I AM PRAYING TO GOD that she doesnt need the surgery. In a week I take her back and hopefully this will show some difference. He pulled her leg a lot though which made her YELPPPP. Shes such a drama queen. He didnt even touch her leg after that and she was looking at me when he went closer to her she started yelping lol. Well today I am a lot more confident. I'm in the know with this Doctor. He's straight forward. one woman came all the ways from Pennsylvania with her Pug. So thats a good sign. I ordered joint 2 from dr foster and smith it has that MSM stuff. I forgot to find out if I could mix the two. I'll keep you posted! Thanks so much for the advice.

Hopefully with rest, it will heal. Could have been stretched and swollen. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you. Joint 2 is what its called? Do you mean mix the joint supplement with the meds? I had always had my girl on her supplements even with meds. If you are not comfortable with it, call your vet to get assurance from him. I believe it is fine, but you can ask.
You sound so much more assure of yourself too. Thats a good thing.

thanks, well the joint 2 is the name of it. DRFOSTERSMITH.COM has it. Im going to ask the vet if i can give her the supplements. I just spoke to the old vet and he said that METACAM can give the dog serious stomach problems because shes too young. What meds do you give yours? I made an appointment with DVM Robert Parker for this tuesday at the animal hospital of manhattan. But I might reschedule till I see how the 7days on the METACAM works. Supposively he wrote books and is one of the best in the state. Hes an orthopedic specialist. I was quoted $200 just to see him. But whatever it takes to get her better.

Yes, you can use the human stuff for your dog. I would't have posted it if you couldn't.

It comes in many different strengths & all I can tell you is - what I had did not have any mg's on it. My vet told me to use half a tablet for my 20# dog. She also said the body sloughs off any extra so you can't OD.

The supplement from WM is just as good as the special stuff from the vets or pet store IMO, & a whole bunch cheaper. I mostly put that link up so you could see how it worked.

Just make sure you give her some food with her meds. It lessens the chance of tummy upset. Most meds do have some sort of problem that can occur. But usually its if you have them on it for long periods of time. Then you would need to do blood tests like every six months to make sure all the organs are working properly. Just watch her, and if she is doing fine. Continue. How long is she going to be on Metacam? You can do a bit of research on the med if you are worried.
I've had Sasha on Derramax, Adequan, and a couple other things. But now I have her just on gluco-chondroitant. Because those meds never seeded to help her. Had to have her blood checked twice yearly.

She's only going to be on the metacam for 7 days. I spoke to the vet and he said that occurances like God forbid a dog dying or having ulcers is if they are on it for a long period of time like you said. He said that I'm actually giving her less of the recommended dosage for her size cause he wants to be extra safe. So I'm just keeping an eye on her

Sounds completely normal. Hopefully any swelling in the joint will go down, and it will be fine.
