Here's my problem: in addition to my canine daughter Kimika Marie, I have two canine sons; HoneyBear James, a 105 lb. black chow/yellow lab mix, and Tuffy Robert, a Bichon. (all three are 'fixed') HoneyBear, due to complications during his surgery, has Intermittent Rage Disorder, and from time to time, Tuffy's very existence seems like anathema to him, and he will attack Tuffy and beat him up...two days ago, HoneyBear honest-to-pete tried to MURDER him--damn-near tore his throat open! HoneyBear has been on Amytriptyline for two years now...and he is SO-O-O-O-O bonded to me--I've had the kid since the day he was born--he would NEVER be able to adapt or bond to another person(s)/home...since the other day, EVERY TIME he claps EYES on Tuffy, he has made his position CRYSTAL- clear--"Give me HALF a chance, and I WILL KILL Tuffy" The question is, COULD a communicater (a) get him to tell WHY he hates Tuffy SO MUCH, and, (b)get him to agree to STOP assaulting him and trying to kill him?????
he is a chow cross and chows are notorious for disliking dogs of the same sex, it is common, either keep them totally seperated, or re-home one, I had to re home my Chow for this same reason.. Her and my female lived together for about 1.5 years before it got so bad that they would fight through doors, fences, gates, kennels.
I would consult a behaviorist, but more than likely you will have to rehome one or the other. Definitely keep them separate for the time being or he will most certainly kill the other dog. Like Ruffian stated, Chows generally do not like other dogs of the same sex. They also tend to have a prey drive around small animals, including smaller dogs (especially if the chow mix is 100+ lbs). Seriously look into rehoming one or the other it seems like you have very few options as he has attacked before and really has a problem with the other dog.
He's your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You're his life, his love, his leader. He will be faithful and true to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion
