My silky terrier keeps on eating his poop! I have been giving him Deter for almost a month and a half. His poop smells HORRIBLE!! Does anyone know if the deter is what is making his poop smell bad, or could it be the type of food I'm giving him? He is currently eating Blue Buffalo which is a human grade food, but I'm thinking about changing it to Nutro. I have heard many good and bad things about it, but because his poop smells so bad I want to do something. So, is it Deter or his food? His stools are not always solid either. Lately, they have been really soft.
Hmm..it could be a combination of many factors including his food or the deter. I have not heard good things about the Blue Buffalo food, but might be a little biased because the nutro food is what I feed my dogs as well as what the rescue I work at uses.
You could certainly try a different food, nutro is a great food. If you are trying a new food, switch it over 10 or so days...1/4 old, 3/4 new for the first 2 days, then 1/2 and 1/2, then 3/4 new and 1/4 old. Give it a couple of weeks (as any switching can cause loose stools). There are many other good brands as well. Check the labels...I'm fairly certain you can even view the labels online because it is overwhelming to go into a dog food aisle and have to pick/compare brands!
I also could be just a learned behavior/habit of eating his poop. Definitely do not give him the opportunity to do so. Go out with him, pick up poop right away, and just keep the yard free of poop (kinda sucks, but if you remove it, he can't eat it!) Ask your vet what to try as well, he/she may have some better suggestions as well.
He's your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You're his life, his love, his leader. He will be faithful and true to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion
Thank you so much. I hope I'm doing this right because I'm new to this site/forum. Ok, so in your biased opinion you suggest I switch the food to Nutro. Not a problem, but which one should I get? There are many different types. Max, ultra, etc.
Also, he poops on a pee pad. I clean it up right away. I also tried spraying it with vinegar which failed miserably and smelled up the room.
Here is my problem in addition to the food/Deter problems. I need to leave him at home for 8 hours max soon, most likely 7 hours. I have been doing some research on how long a dog can be in his crate and there are tons of mixed opinions. I would love to keep him in our puppy safe room because he is potty trained, but then he eats his disgusting poop. What would you suggest I do?
Personally, I find nutro to be a lower quality food. Pretty much all of it. And I'd switch to something else, rather than down to that.
Lot of dogs find 'poopsicles' appealing though. And in winter , many dogs try to store up on extra calories. I have a 2 and a half year old that's never eaten poop in her life. She's decided it's all about looking for her own poopsicles lately, and she couldn't be on a much higher quality food.
I use Nutro Natural Choice for my lab and he does great on it but when I was using it for my cocker she would throw up 2-3 times a week. I started using Eagle Pack for her and she is doing fantastic on it. Much to my surprise it doesn't cost that much more.
Funny thing about Nutro. I remember about 5 years ago, being at Petco (which I do not buy food from anymore) a dog had pooped in the store, and an employee had to clean it up. She was complaining about how bad it stunk and asked if the person was feeding their dog Nutro. They said yes. LOL I like Innova, and Artemis for mine. Oh Artemis has a small breed kibble too. I'm in Cali too. What part you from?
Whoever said you can't buy happiness, must have never owned a dog!!!!!!!!!!!
Tabasco, that sounds like a great plan. I guess since vinegar isn't working. I've been reading about dogs that start to acquire the taste though. I'm sure for some dogs it works and others not so much. I'll give it a try. Thanks!
Not sure about the dog food, but I fed the kittes Nutro (out of the food we usually bought and not much selection at TSC!), and they pooped twice as much and it smelled soooo bad. I would definitely try the other recommended brands.

My puppy was doing the same thing and i changed him to nutro on a reccomendation of a friend of mine and she hasn't eaten any since we started it almost a week ago..is the food your feeding her being comletely digested maybe she sees her food in her feces and thinks it is her food? that is what my pup was doing. Since the nutro it doesn't look like her food anymore therefor she isn't interested.. good luck
