I just found a kitten (not really young, but a kitten for sure) walking around on a busy road and brought him home. I have two kittens already that were born last summer, and two, two year old Chihuahuas. The dogs like the cat but the cat doesn't like the dogs. My two cats I've had don't like the new cat and the new cat doesn't like them. Do you have any tips on getting them used to each other? Thanks!
First, make sure that the new cat has a place to get away from all of you. He's scared, young and being confronted by a bunch of new people and animals. He's right to act defensive until he knows he's safe. This is a new environment and cats aren't usually happy about this. Give him some time and space and he'll come around. Good luck!
Thanks. He seems fine when the animals aren't around. Right now i'm sitting on my bed reading and he's sleeping at the bottom. I just don't know how long my other cats will put up with being trapped in a room, but I can't let them out or they start a fight. Well, thanks again. :)
You don't say how long it's been, but a day or two is enough. He should settle in soon. They will hiss and bat at each other, but I doubt there will be all out was. That said, cats can be jealous little bugger, try not to give the new guy all your attention. I've always had cats and they have very different personalities. My cat, who's nickname is Cranky Frankie, took a couple weeks to make friends with Joey, my laid back shelter cat and I got Emma, my dog, in November and Frankie has finally come around. When the new cat is more acclimated find a toy, a ribbon or string works best, and get all of them to chase it together! Have fun, Sherry
Thank you! I actually just got the cat today. I liked what you said about playing with them together, I'll have to try that. When I first brought him in, my other cats cornered him then one junped on him and chased him under the couch and around our dining room until we finally got one of them out the front door, so they are pretty tough on each other. I'll just wait a while before I get them together again.
