I am new to this website and i hope im doing this right, if not-sorry! but i have a yorkshire puppy over 3months old. when i got him, i would put him in his crate for 1 hour everyday in the day-no peeing, the 2nd week i put him in for 2 hours-no peeing, the 3rd week i put him in for 3 hours, still no peeing. so the other day i put him in his crate for 45 minutes to go to the store, come back-he had peed. today i went to work out, i was gone for 1 1/2 hours came back, peed again. why? am i doing something wrong? am i teaching him it's okay to pee in his cage? he has just enough room in his crate to turn around and i leave him with a chew toy always, but i dont want for this to become a habit-he obviously doesnt mind sitting in his pee. help.
are u giving him alot more water? Is there to much space in the crate. Did you usally walk him before putting him the crate? My dog used to do the same, then I started to walk him before I put in the crate and he stopped. It doesn talk time tought. Let me know how it turns out..wendy
make sure he potties or you walk him right before you put him in there. That is the most important thing. Also, don't scold him after you come home because he will associate that with your coming home and not the accident. Like Wendy said before, monitor his water intake, make sure he has ample time to pee it out before you leave him.
No dog likes to sit in pee/poop, but you know how bad it feels when you really have to pee, like the feeling that you would go anywhere, and I mean anywhere! Thats most likely what happened. Sitting in it was better than having to be like a wild siberian racehorse!! :)
He's your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You're his life, his love, his leader. He will be faithful and true to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion
thanks! im not allowed to take him outside just yet, i got him at a pet store and when i brought him home he had a cold and was on 3 different meds. The vet said to wait for nicer weather and his cold clears up, i finish w/meds on march 3. i live in ohio and its been like 10 below, so when the weather gets nicer, i will definetly walk him.
I have found with the smaller breeds that the kennel doesn't work. Try buying him a play yard and set it up in your kitchen. You can find them at any baby store. Place his puppy pad at one end seperated from his bed. I use this technique with three week old puppies. As soon as they start moving around I place news paper over the entire floor of the play yard. By the time they are five weeks old they are down to one section of paper. My clients are thrilled when they take home a eight week old puppy and it is already paper trained. Working with toy breed puppies... you should never deprive them of food and water. They need it to maintain their sugar balance. Going to long without either can result in hypoglycemia and the loss of your beloved dog. I hope this helps
Small breeds can definitely be crate trained! My yorkie is crate trained and never has accidents. And going a couple hours without food or water won't hurt them as long as they are eating and drinking fine when they are provided with it throughout the day.
being from a pet store he may have become more used to peeing in a crate and it may take some more work to teach him not too. their den instinct can be wiped out by being in a crate all the time in the store. catch him going where you want him to and praise the daylights out of him and give him at treat. lots of positive reinforcement for going where he's supposed to. i'd time his water too, not limit but time to several times per day until he gets better at housetraining. oh, and where in ohio are you? i mostly grew up in cuyahoga falls.
