Help, Has anyone ever heard of this. two days ago our cho. lab had 9 puppies. Today she had killed 3 and ate one of them. she had 4 underneath her laying on them . she was shaking and panting. What could be wrong.
o god that's so horrible! I've never heard of anything like this. But you do you think you should seperate the mother and the pups so she can't eat them anymore? Also, is it because the mother hasn't been fed enough and that she's hungry?
Hello, I have heard of this, and sad to say that if your female did indeed kill her own pups, I mean killed them, not accidently laid on them, but flat out killed them, she should be spayed and never bred again. There is something wrong with a female if she kills her own puppies, even more so when it's a labrador. I hope that the remaining puppies survive. bestof luck.
Eating a dead pup is nature’s way of keeping the den clean. Laying on her pups and killing them this way is not that unusual. That can and does happen, especially with restless inexperience moms.
The panting and shaking would worry me though. It could mean that she still have a pup stuck in her. It could also mean that she has low blood calcium level (check her temperature.) Either case could be life threatening with out medical attention. After 2 days, she should have calmed down quite a bit. If she is still restless, a visit to the vet may be in order.
Sometimes some do get laid on accidently. I was told that if a female eats a pup it may have already been dead, and she was trying to clean up as one would do in the wild so it won't attract predators. Or she may know something is wrong with the pup. I have one female that isn't very careful when she lays down. So, I take the pups away from her and take them to her every two hours and watch while they nurse and make sure every pup eats well too. Now the shaking, maybe she is nervous or don't feel well? You may want to take her to the vet to be checked out.
