It started with one puppy. I keep my kennel's spotless, but have been told this is very common. I am still kicking myself for not working harder. Only one litter is effected. The other litter is still eating me out of house and home, although I am treating them too. I have 2 puppies at the vet, on IV fluids. Both on Albon, getting better. I am on day 3(They get their meds at noon) of treating the rest of the litter at home. Stools are starting to get better. My concern is that they are drinking water, and nursing when mom will let them, which is not often, but some are not eating. There are 4 that are doing well, playing already, respnding well to the Albon. The others, I can not get them to eat. I have been getting artificial mothers milk down their throats with a syrgine. Same way they get their meds. Any suggestions on how to entice them to eat? I have purchased "cheap" canned puppy food and microwaved it, to entice them. I am boiling chicken now. Any help would be very welcome. I have had many litters, never ever had this happen. I feel awful. I clean their kennel once an hour now. And I changed my cleaning solution to bleach and water solution. Day late, I am very sad to say. Thanks for the help.
HELLO I can completely understand where you are coming from. We to have a kennel and we too have Coccidia in just about every litter. It is in the well water and there is no way to get rid of it from what we read. We start the puppies on Albon as soon as they get the runs usually about 4 weeks when they are eating and drinking alot on their own. They respond extremely well to the Albon and we havent had to have any to the vet, but if they needed to be rehydrated we have the IV bag to do it, or the pedialite or gatorade. It is messy and does need alot more cleaning for a day or 2 but then its all good. It has nothing to do with how clean your kennel is, it is more then likely in your water. GOOD LUCK
We live in the country, so it could very well be in the water. Should I boil it? I have never had this happen in the 3 years I have been breeding. My heart is breaking for my babies. Can I give them pedilyte? Will that helkp Hyderate them? I just use a sryinge and put it down their throat. They have not thrown up the mommies milk so far. I have been doing it every 3 hours. Is that enough?
Also, alot of adult dogs do have coccidia.. but since their immune systems are good, it doesnt effect them. Unlike puppies that have little to none immune systems to fight it off. So they also have gotten it from mom or one of your other dogs.
Moms just started coming out with the family this past week. We are in sub zero temps with about 3 feet of snow. Can the bug live through that? They never track feces into the house. I try so hard to keep my kennels, which are 2- 32 square feet - 4 feet high cages (gorilla tough, they are great) on opposite ends of my dining room. It is easy to keep that room really warm and have a common area for each litter to play every day. I wash everything down now as soon as one litter leaves.
Once coccidia is in your yard there is no way to get rid of it. When I got Blaze she had it, was treated for it twice and now over it but any dog that comes into my yard now risks the threat of coccidia. This is why I quite my doggie day care. Wiley, Buddy and Daisy have all been treated for it also. It has now been 9 months with no problems.
You will most likely have to go through this from now on. I would certainly visit with your vet about it.

for those who can not get rid coccidia from their kennel (virtually anyone with pups)there are two products called Marquis and Baycox. these drugs can be used as a preventative. given every 2 weeks starting at 3 days can prevent coccidia infections in pups.
Here is a link with more information about how to deal with coccidia and about Marquis, where to get it and how to use it.
if you are unable to get a prescription for marquis and unable to get it with out prescription through the source on that link you can get Baycox which is basically the same thing. You can get Baycox without a prescription from online Australian pet supply stores. search for it. make sure you get the piglet formula. the dose is 1/10ml/lbs. the schedules is the same as marquis.
It is not cheap, but IT REALLY WORKS. one tube/bottle will last for several litters and will save you a lot of money and headache in the long run. I used to have a problem with coccodia until i started using it. I haven't had a problem since with treated pups.
If I seem to have a superiority complex, it is because you make it so easy.
Fergus, there's only a very small possibility your water supply is contaminated. Especially since it's from a very protected source...your own well. (Your septic system is in good shape, I assume?) I suppose, if you're really worried about it, you can have testing done.
Don't beat yourself up about it. Coccidia is just "one of those things" kennels tend to harbor.
when i got my puppy she had coccida very bad. It took many many trips to the vet and many differnt meds and repeating the meds gosh for over a month and a half couldnt get rid of it no matter what was done- She did always eat well but never gained weight. she was malnurished and did end up having a iv for fluids at the vets office along with feeding her low residue dog food and chicken and rice. To this day she still has the symptoms of coccida- but has tested neg the last 2 times ive had her tested. she is now 6 months old- but still has diarhea most days and also the worst smelling in the world- i can smell her a mile away before i even see the poop- it will knock you on your butt- ughh Daisy was 2 months old when i got her. which ended up being a puppy mill- and shes 6 months old now and the vet wants to do blood work to see if he can find out what is going on with her, he did just deworm her, but still nothing has changed. coccida is a horrible thing-Bentley my other 1 year old dog never got it- i did clean up daisys accidents and cleaned bedding and every thing else daily so he wouldnt get it which he never did- The vet thought he would have it just because they eat together and drink out of the smae bowls and sleep together ect- but tested neg when i wanted just to make sure hes never had diarhea so i know hes good- but now daisy has gained tons of weight tho since i got her she was so very sick she was pooping blood and so very tiny- the first few weeks she gained like 6 pounds tho she was 2.1 pounds at 2 months old and now 6 months old she weighs im sure now 10 pounds- if not more. shes a porker. she is a mix of maltese and bichon frise. So i know what you are going threw it was horrible and i would cry and didnt know if she was going to make it she was sooo sick. we were at the vets office it seemed 2x a week . for a good 3 months- which her vaccines were all delayed because of her being so sick. and now her being spayed is also delayed because of the constant diarhea untill lab work can be done and to find out what is going on- i would swear it was coccdia still but shes tested neg but everything is the same from when she had it before but no blood-
This has been horrible. Once I think they are eating, then they stop. I brought home the 2 at the vet's yesterday. They are eating. I left 4 with him that I was concerned were not eating enough. I am taking 2 more this morning. I am beside myself. I did find out it's not the water, yes our septic new,it's only 4 years old. One puppy is scheduled to go home next Saturday. I have to tell her family, who has fallen in love with her, in case they want to change their minds. She is such a love. She was the last to get sick, ate yesterday. Then this morning, she is bone thin and listless. I am taking her to the vet. Thanks for all the advise. I will find out about that product and use it. I never want this to happen again. These puppies are my life. Everything I do revolves around my dogs. IF you could see my site you would see that. People call our home the Pinscher Palace! They are treated so well. I feel terrible, because it is my fault. I just want my fat healthy puppy's back.
hey are eating merrick grannies pot pie hard food and canned. but they still liked the wellness better i think. at first they were crazy for this pot pie but i will put out a bowl of hard wellness and they eat that and wont eat the pot pie- so i guess they are on wellness hard and merricks hard and merricks and also wellness canned- i mix them together.
Yes you can definatly give them pedialyte through a syringe, most of the time they like it and it perks them up almost immediatly. We have never had it as bad a you seem to are you sure nothing else is going on (Giardia?) Did you get them Panacured? Usually onedoseof Albon and they are alot better, by the second dose they are fine but we keep giving it for the amount of days specified. Once they get it and get over it they seem to be almost immuned and dont get it again while here. Here we definitly have it in the well as many other people in our area do too. Our vet said the only way to get rid of it in the yard is to burn the grass. Good Luck
The 2 puppies I brought home are doing well. Eating bioled hamburger and chicken. I took the entire rest of the litter, 7 puppies, to the vet for iv fluids. They were just not eating enough. He said they were just really sick when we started to treat them. I will be adding treatment at 4 weeks of age to my breeding program. All we can do now is pray that they all pull through. They have been tested for everything. I wanted to be certain, so I had them test for everything. It's not like I do this for money.I just want my fat healthy puppies back! It is amazing that this time last week, they were fine. Anyway, I will keep you all posted. My vet says that once they respond, they will be fine. It will not effect them the rest of their life. I was grateful to hear that. I truly am blessed with an excellent vet. IF anyone has any good recipes for fattening up puppies, I would love to hear them. I am currently feeding Natural Choice, cooked and dry. Boiled chicken and hamburger. I will get pedialyte tomorrow and give that to them daily. Thanks for all the help!
when daisy had coccida very bad when i got her, i had her on boiled hamburger and rice, per the vets request. also the vet had her on low residue dog food. which even tho she was very malnurished when i got her and very tiny, this burger and rice mixed with the low residue food sure did fatten her up- goodness she started gaining weight- with in days of feeding her this. every time i took her to the vet and she was weighed she was gaining a few pounds it seemed every 5 days or so- I cant believe its the same dog how small she was, and now at 6 months old shes a good if not more 10 pounds. from being 2 pounds at 2 months old- shes my chunky monkey- She could even be closer to 12 pounds by now- bigger then i thought she would be at 6 months old- But as long as shes healthy i dont care if shes 60 pounds-
do you know the name of the low reidue dog food? I am really discouraged now. My second litter, who has not been sick, but whom I have been treating since Wed anyway - well one stopped eating this morning and started vomiting. I do not understand. I am treating them! Why is he getting sick?
I'm sorry that your pups are sick but I really don't think anyone can tell you why they are getting sick except your vet.
My vet gave Blaze and everyone else Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim Tablets, USP. Treatment was 5 days. Now Blaze was a few months old before I figured out what was going on.
Wiley, Buddy, Daisy and all the cats came down with it also. It was a mess for a while. I did treat every one twice before it was all gone. What I was doing wrong is treating just one. I then started treatment on all of them at the same time and licked the problem.
I think you are doing the correct thing about telling your potential buyers of your pups about this. I got Blaze from a puppy mill bust so the shelter has no clue that she was sick nor would the puppy mill for that fact. I would have known I would have never put her out with the rest of the family until she was treated. Or treated her at the shelter before picking her up.
I do believe that they do build up an immunity from this but your newborns are sitting ducks. Hopefully Juno's advice on the meds will help. I did check out the link and read about it. The fact they say that older dogs don't get it is false. I know first hand that a three year old dog, a three year old cat, a two year old dog, a seven year old cat can get this!!
Its a little late now for this advice but when I have a litter, I start them on Albon and Fenbendazole (Panacur) even if the stools get a little soft and before they get runny. I also give it to them as a preventative during weaning just because I know they will have their mouths on everything. It is largley spread through fecal matter and I know my self that no matter how much you clean the puppies when very small will charge right through it and unless you give them a chlorhexadine bath every hour it will be on their feet and in between their toes and any who has ever introduced puppies to dog food know where the feet go, feet first into the food so that is a high risk time of getting coccidia or giardia. Chlorhexidine solution is a better cleaning agent than bleach. My pharmacology book states that chlorine (bleach) does a poor job of disinfecting in the presence of organic material which is feces, hair, etc. Chlorhexidine is very good and kills everything with great efficiency. Chlorhexidine is what they use to clean the surgery tables with and it is also very safe to use around animals and puppies at least just as safe as bleach or safer. It is a little more expensive than bleach but gallon of it will run around $15 if you look around online. Some places charge a lot more for it but do some research and you can find it reasonable.
It has been a terrible couple of days. Because the puppies got sick mere days before their scheduled shots they got a secondary infection, coronavirus, which also causes diarrhea and vomiting. This morning we lost Jack, one of our black and tan boys. He was adorable with the cutest ears and was so outgoing. I cried for 3 hours. I just can't believe all this has happened in a matter of days. One minute they were fat, healthy, happy puppies. Now they are dying. My vet was up with them all night. The problem is that the meds to take care of the infections are oral and they can't seem to hold them down. I am so sick I can't work. I am going to the vet's to see them at 3. I will never have another litter that is not given the preventative at 4 weeks. My poor puppies. I feel so awful. Aidan, my special boy that I am keeping, Mickey and Ezra are the worst. Bo is doing well. Kelley is hanging on so is Rosie. Please keep them in your prayers.
