whenever a cat starts urinating inappropriately the first thing that needs to be done is have a urine sample checked for infection or diabetes/kidney problems. if all that comes back ok then move on to behavioral reasons.
some cats develop this problem and it could be due to a wide variety of reasons. ranging from, unclean litterboxes, change in brand of litter, stress in the home, not wanting to share a potty with other cats in the household ... the list goes on and on and it is different for every cat.
Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.
Sable Got a clean bill of health from the vet! She is spayed, and we have one other cat but... they were raised together and we have two kitty litters... That are cleaned all the time I thought maybe she didnt like to use it twice. BUT... That wasnt the problem. It has just been in the last couple of weeks, and like I said only every now and then. But last night she did one that I couldnt believe!!! She is the type of cat that always has to have fresh Cold water!! (spoiled) if someone drinks out of her water bowl she will cry until I clean it and get fresh water. The dog drank her water last night and while I was fixing supper SHE URINATED in her water bowl!!! Almost like an Ill show you thing! She has Never done things like this! Please help! oh it isnt the dogs she was raised with them. Majorlover Majorlover
Life is too short!!! tell someone you LOVE them today!
Major, My cat Henry has this same problem. He has been to the vet but just has behavior problems. The only thing I could do for this cat is I moved him out into the heated/AC spa room. He has a door to go in and outside. He doesn't pee out there at all but as soon as he gets into my home he will spray. He is neutered but besides throwing him out (which I would never do) I had no choice but to make a new home for him in there. He has his cat tree out there, heated bed, food, water, toys and a sun beam in the middle of the afternoon to lay in. I do spend a lot of time out there so he isn't missing anything but I'm enjoying the pee free home!
maybe she is just marking what she thinks is her territory I know how annoying this can be my 5 yr old gets mad at me sometimes and she pees on my things only once in a while but it is annoying when it happens
I wish there were a way to make a sticky on this, because I have info from a cat behavior specialist on litter pan issues, and I'm too lazy to type them out everytime someone has a question! But here's an abbreviated version:
Peeing outside the litter pan is basically caused by 1 of 4 different problems: 1. medical problem (UTI, renal failure, etc) 2. prefers another location or another type of litter 3. emotional problem/anxiety 4. marking behavior
If the cat is urinating in the same spot all the time, it's going to be either the location of the pan or the type of litter (texture or scent) that he doesn't like.
If using different surfaces (chair, carpets, etc) it could just be that the litter pan is aversive. That leads to other possibilities, such as: dirty pan, or doesn't like a covered pan or litter pan liners or scented litter, etc. Could be that the litter pan is too small or too deep, or he just doesn't like the location.
At the shelter, there were a few cats that would urinate in the water dish. I have absolutely no idea why they did this, and that's one thing that I forgot to ask this specialist!
I also have info from the Cornell Feline Health Center, which gives a little more detail about multi-pet households. Let me know if you want me to post some of that.
