we have a 4 days away from being 16 week old weimeriener which we are currently crate and house training. which she is doing well but my fiance insists we take her out to do her business every two hours at night. at first i was okay with it but now i think we might be doing more harm than good...isnt the crate supposed to be teaching her to hold it? if were getting up in the middle of the night to let her out every 2 hours....then we are defeating the purpose of the crate, right? i just wanted to know if i was right or wrong before i bring it up to the significant other.....thanks
I don't think it hurts any if he lets him/her out when you two are home but I do see where you are coming from and from growing up I know that dogs learn how to hold it when you are not home. Good Luck.
when crate training my pup i would get up at night to walk her if she cried in the crate. i didnt get up on a schedule. when i got up i made sure she was just taken out to potty and then put back in the crate. that way she learned if she cried it was cause she had to go, that it wasnt play time when she came out of the crate. for the first month she would whine 1-3 times a night. as the month progressed it decreased to once a night and by the time she was 4 months old she could hold it all night.
i would rather they learn to let me know when they have to go but if she wont, then i would set the alram but increase the time by an hour every night til she can hold it all night .
Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.
