Deported to where? what country will take him? He can't really go back home. They do not exactly welcome collaborators who snitch on their brothers.
Most likely the only way to get him to talk was to cut a deal with him. The government would not have offer him all that if he did not have something worth while to offer in return. He is no longer a threat. He will most likely be watched for the rest of his life. One slip up and the deal is off, If he survive jail that is. They do not exactly like snitches in there either.
