I have a 6 month old Golden Retriever. About a month ago I noticed in his kennel he was panting excessively. Air conditioned so not hot. Called vet after hours went in next morning. Vet said looked like tonsilitis and a very red throat. Antibiotic shot, anti inflamatory shot and oral antibiotics at home. After completing 10 days he was still panting. Back to vet. Xray shows broncial and still has alot of gunk in back of throat. Another antibiotic shot this time oral at home and prednisone for 5 days. Has been done meds now for 2 days and he is again panting excessively and snorts when in a deep sleep. When he is awake he runs and plays and shows no signs of anything wrong. its just when he is sleeping. Vet said not likely Cushings as he is so young. Heart and lungs vet says sound fine. Normal temp during all this. Ive thought stress when in kennel but how can he be stressing when in a deep sleep. Any ideas? Im plannning back to vet Monday and request blood work to see if anything shows up there.
I just had to add a note back. After many $ later and a whole lot of worry my pup was laying in his kennel last night. Down the hall I can hear this odd whistle. i check on him and its him whistling thru his nose. A short time later he huffs and snorts. Voila!!!!!!!!! the panting stops!! He horfed a piece of food up his nose and this whole time was mouth breathing cause his nose was plugged!!!!! Today he still is pant free when resting but occasionally huffs and snorts but the major distress seems to have passed.
