Simone (our 11 month old Rottweiler) will turn 1 year old on April 2. She is currntly on Nutro Max, lamb and rice, for large breed puppies. We were wondering when we should start transitioning her to adult dog food (same brand, but for adult dogs)?
i believe that larger breed dogs should remain on puppy food til they are ~ 18 months old. larger breeds tend to grow slower and mature slower so in essence they are puppies a lot longer than a smaller breed dog.
there are different schools of thought on this though and lots of large/giant breed breeders and owners say they should never be on puppy food at all and should start out on adult food. this is because larger breeds grow very quickly and can be predisposed to certain bone growth problems if they grow too quickly. the adult formulas tend to allow them the slow growth that they need to prevent them from developing things like pano.
but if your dog is growing nicely, not too fast, and isnt exhibiting any signs of bone problems, i would leave him on the large breed puppy food until he was 18 months old, if he were my dog.
Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.
I didn't mean to come across as misunderstood as i was. i misinterpreted your last line of your post i guess..sorry the question mark made me think you might have been thinking about changing her or his food.sorry
