We had an 8 year old black lab, dalmation mix (male) for since he's been about 4 months old. Until yesterday, he's been our only pet. Since the neighbors moved and took their 3 dogs with them, he's been standing around for the last several months barking and waiting for them. So...we decided to get him a "friend". We thought about it carefully, for quite a while, and decided a smaller breed female would work best. Our current dog (Patches) has never given us any reason to believe he wouldn't welcome another animal in the house. We even introduced Patches and Mocha (the new dog) before we decided to adopt her and bring her home. Patches didn't seem very interested, however, nor did he seem to be angry. I know we were not on his territory at the adoption clinic though. We get both dogs home and Patches isn't that happy...Mocha wants to play a little but Patches wants to run from her. We gave them each a toy and when Patches tried to take Mocha's, Mocha barked at him and he went away. Vice-versa, when Patches had a toy that Mocha tried to take, Patches said NO! For the most part, Patches is ignoring Mocha - it's like he wants absolutley NOTHING to do with her. If Mocha approaches Patches from the rear, Patches gives a quick growl. If Mocha approaches her from the front, Patches might sniff a second but then runs away. We've given Patches lots of attention and tried to show him that Mocha's nice. It's only been 24 hours but I'm wondering if this is normal? Can anyone help???
