Does anyone have experience agility training? Are there any tips to get them to learn faster? I bought a small backyard course for the dogs and the kids to do when the weather's nice, and I'm wondering if it's easy for a dog to learn. I have a papillon and norfolk terrier mix.
I think it would be fun exercise for both the kids and the dogs. The dogs are 2 1/2 and 2 years.
Dog sports are as deep as you want to go into them. For agility. I would research clicker training. and then I would get terri arnolds "steppin up to success" it's pricey but its a great book, it's not an agility book, but the theory of training is most defintly geard toward happy go lucky sports like agility.
As for easy for the dog to learn? dogs are great learners. it's how we communicate the ideas that is tough. It can be tough working with something that does not speak english. But if you stick to more postive training. Even if you make a mistake...the dog will not be ruined and re-training is easy. I have found putting to much pressure on the dogs is what makes them hard to train later. I might get a nice sit....But it will show up later in things like the recall.
These sports only take one skill...and that's dog training. And dog training is as deep as you dive in.
I believe a dog's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment he holds dear, is when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle-with a ball in his mouth."
