Yes a female dog has to be in her estrus cycle to become pregnant. There cycle is normally around 21 days. Most females stand to be bred around day 11. The eggs are fertilized and then attach to the uterine wall approximately 3 days later. They have found sperm able to live up to 72 hours in the uterus of a dog. The best way to find out the ideal time to begin breeding is by using a progestrone test with a blood sample. There is also a blood test that can be done to check for pregnancy 21 days after the breeding takes place. A really good vet can palpate to feel for puppies fairly early in the pregnancy.

Thank you so much, everyone, and thank you, Windy Valley, for your much-needed information! I couldn't find this stuff out anywhere on the internet, and I wondered if my dog Lucky had become pregnant by a neighbor's dog--but since I don't think she was "in heat" I guess she isn't, which is probably for the best. Thank you so much again!! Hope your dogs are all well!!!
