When I found out I was pregnant the FIRST thing everyone said was "Get rid of those dogs.. Its going to be too much for you to handle.. Get rid of the cats.. You can't have cats near a baby".. Are these people INSANE?? I read somewhere that if you have your child exposed to animals its less likely they will be allergic.. And if Abby IS allergic, she better learn to love shots and her room because the cats and dogs were here first and they have the run of the place :)
How wonderful are you??? You're also a great writer. I would love to see this letter read on CNN. It should be required reading by every cute little couple that decide they want to try out their parenting skills on a puppy prior to getting pregnant. It makes me so furious. I worked with someone who did exactly that. She and her husband made over that dog and treated it like gold. THEN, she got pregnant. As soon as she knew, the dog was not only kicked out of their bed, it was placed in the garage, never to see the inside of the house again. On it's good days, she gave it water and food. When she'd drive in with the baby, the dog would try to smell the baby and hope to get a look - many dogs love kids. But this woman told me she would rush the baby in the house and slam the door. I left the company soon after so I don't know what happened but I'm sure that poor dog ended up at a shelter.
RescuePups - Thanks for your post. Interesting. . .
I'm curious about your screen name. I have rescued four. My first border collie mix who was killed (from shelter), my current border mixed with probably chow (gorgeous girl!)(from shelter), a papillion/maybe sheltie/ maybe cocker spaniel (from shelter), and my little rat terrier(rescued off the street with no hair from her shoulders back and sores all over her body. Her hair is now luscious and she's so adorable!) Aren't rescued dogs the best? All of my dogs are so sweet and so loving. It took alot of TLC and patience, and treating each one differently depending on what they needed. My rat terrier is the youngest and she cried when I picked her up and didn't want anything to do with me for about the first 3 years after I rescued her. But she LOVED my border collie. In fact, after I got her medical treatment and her hair grew in, I was going to find her a home but by then my border collie had adopted her. She's her own personal little sheep to herd around the house. These two are crazy about one another. Hannah, my rat terrier, will climb on top of Tobee (bc) and chew on her ears and Tobee will just lay quietly in ecstacy. It's so funny and heartwarming to watch them. Just in the past few months, Hannah has decided I'm wonderful and now she's such a mama's girl. She sleeps under the covers right next to me and comes and gives me kisses every day. It took three years and now she finally trusts me. It makes me so sad to think how many wonderful dogs are looking for a home and euthanized so quickly. So many people today are looking for "designer dogs". My hairdresser bought a yorkie last summer and she has a different outfit on every day. Of course, she never takes her for a walk and I've seen the dog pee in the shop three times - once all over a customer.
For a second i thought you were serious about getting rid of your kids, i was thinking holy crapp this lady needs to realize that humans come first in life. LOL Then i started reading that everyone was like good joke and lauphing. Now that i understand what this joke is about, it is funny :)
Cool...I also wanted to thank you for directing my attention to craigs list today. I saw an for dogs at the shelter near my home, and that's where I stopped before I got home today. I've been telling people that I'm going and never made it. Anyway, I picked up an app for volunteers, so hopefully I'll be able to do that.
