This is a somewhat delicate discussion, I know, but I want to be sure I'm doing this right. In a manual collection, I've been told to grasp just in front of the "jewels" and you will feel him knot up. Then you should have your receptacle to catch the specimen... So I've been told, that your grasp will be between the "jewels" and the knot, and this method takes about 30 seconds to accomplish, with inseminaton following immediately. I do have the cath and all supplies.. Anyone familiar with A.I.?
Unlike with humans, It will take a lot longer then 30sec. There is a reason why they stay tied for so long. First you will see some clear liquid. Then the whitish semen will come. Then some more clear liquid. You will need to keep holding and squeezing right behind the knot to restrict blood flow and keep up his erection during the whole process. If you let go, it will be over in 30 sec.
The way I do it is I place the penis in a clear plastic bag for collection so I can see what is going on. When you have a clear plastic bag, you can see when he stops and how much you are getting. I pull it over his knot and squeeze. Once full erection is achieved and he starts to ejaculate, I pull it down while squeezing and massaging with alternating pressure behind the knot to stimulate mating for about 5 minutes to make sure I get it all. Do not let go of the knot until it is over. You will see and feel when he is done.
When he is done, I get it all with a syringe and a long tube, put some KY on the tube and insert it as deep as it will go with out forcing it and slowly injecting it all. Then I raise the back of the bitch to keep anything from spilling back out while holding the “lips” close together and massaging it to stimulate her. I keep doing that for about 15 min then I lock her up in a crate to keep her quit and calm for another hour.
It is not a pleasant process and not for the fain of hearts. If you are of the squeamish type, you might want your vet to do this.
If I seem to have a superiority complex, it is because you make it so easy.
We are having our vet do it for us the first time and he will teach me as well, so that we an do it on our own in the future. Havent done one before or even witnessed it, so I'm afraid of causing damage to the female if I dont get properly trained first.
Let us know how it goes.
People are like slinky's, not really good for much. But its still fun to push them down the stairs.
juno, Thanks for the extra info..very helpful..No I'm a surgical tech, so I'm not faint of heart! and also I have the supplies, I suppose a urinary cath will work as opposed to a cannula, and well, I guess I'll have to collect him by Thursday. Thank you so very much. Schoolbus gal
