We are on day 11 of feeding three orphaned puppies (mamma died). Everything has been going really good, but now today two are refusing to bottle feed and are making unusual never been heard before crying sounds (they sound like my four month old infant crying. I thought maybe they had a belly ache so I stimulted them to poop and pee...they both peed but no poop. Could no pooping be the problem or could it be something else?? This is my first time attempting to feed and raise orphaned puppies. Please help me with any suggestions you may have. Cyanne
I am feeding them puppy milk replacer formula from walmart...same stuff from day one. I thought i remember reading in my internet research not to feed goat milk?? I sure wish i could use expressed breastmilk...I have plenty of that floating around from my own nursing 4 month old :) I'll keep working on getting them to poop. Thanks, cyanne
Goats milk is fine for older puppies but I normally stick with a quality puppy replacer for the first few weeks. Either one with colostrum or Esbilac that has more fat in it.
Puppies can get constipated if they aren't getting enough liquid, or if the formula isn't mixed correctly (not enough water). Then it can be very difficult to get them to poop and they are going to have upset tummies. Small puppies can die from constipation. I would recommend more liquid. As your vet, but on the advice of my vet I have given sugar water to very young constipated puppies.
Good luck with the babies.
