last sunday my family was blessed with a full bred st. benard puppy just six wks old. unfortunaltely i he has had diarrhea and needs to go out several times a day. i can tell his little belly hurts bc he sometimes cannot get comfertable. i did notice he only plays for very short periods and sleeps mostly all the time. but I was also told this is a st. benard's dispositon. not sure if I should take him to the vet. i am probably overworrying but I think I will just the same. any ideas?
I'm no "dog expert", "just" a dog-lover but I'd have your new little guy on the vet's doorstep when they open first thing in the morning -- :-(
For one thing, in my opinion 6 weeks is too young to leave his litter mates.
I've also never suddenly changed food on a pup/dog, far preferring to change their diet gradually.
Diarrhea, though, can quickly lead to dehydration & he won't be absorbing the critical nutrients he needs either.
It's ALWAYS prudent to get a new pup into the vet's office to be checked out within a couple of days after bringing him into your home so, please, yes, get your little guy to the doctor -- :-( Fingers are crossed - keep us posted, okay?
Stress from leaving his home and litter mates can cause diarrhea. It could also be worms or coccidiosis. It is always best to have him checked by a vet within 48 hours of bringing him home. As far as him sleeping a lot... he's still a baby and needs all the rest he can get to grow. Good luck with you little (big) baby. We need pictures!!! :)
Life isn't like a box of chocolates . . it's more like a jar of jalapenos.
Most certainly he does need to see your veterinarian. Six weeks is too young to leave his siblings as I do wonder how long he could possibly have been weaned. Giardia and Coccidia are suspects that are highly treatable if caught early. Since puppies cannot store body fat at such a young age and dehydration is such an issue, your vet is your best friend today.
