Tuesday morning I gave my dog a Frosty Paws (her first one) and a chicken jerky. As the day wore on I noticed her stools were softening. I went to work at 3. When I came home at 8 and let her out to potty. When she pottied she yelped. after further examination, I noticed that her stool was so liquid it was almost water. I also noticed blood. I took her to the vet and the vet said there was a lot of bacteria in the stool. He gave her an antibiotic injection and some Cerntrezine and another perscription to take ( drops ) to be given every 12 hours. Her stools have gotten better ... more solid... but there is still a little blood in them. But she is still in pain when she eliminates. She is up to date on her shots and all and I dont think that the parvo test came back positive, because I think the vet would have called me if it had. Is there anything I can do to help her feel better? She is eating fine. And other than when she poops she is acting pretty much like normal, although she is dragging her but a bit after she poops. I have not completely finished the perscription so is my concern premature? When should she be better when she poops? The vet was closed yesterday, today and tomorrow. If I have to go to the emergency vet I will, but I dont want to if I am just being overly cautious. My mom said it is too soon, I have not allowed the perscription enough time to work since I am not done with it yet and she stool consistancy is improving. Any suggestions?
Her bum probably burns! Try some petroleum jelly on her bum. Shes probably straining and that might have caused some rips, that could be the reason for the blood. And when she does go, it probably stings. Just like humans, when dogs have diarrhea, they don't feel that good. Your bum hurts, and it never seems like theres an end (lol). I'd be miserable too.
Just keep an eye on her and if you have any concerns, call your vet. Its better to be safe than sorry. Good luck, and I hope you feel better Gizmo.
I would get her on some plain yogurt dialy, especailly since she has been on antibiotics. Your vet should have told you to put her on a bland diet for several days also. He didn't??? He just said to feed her regular food?
I would at least get her on some rice several times a day & putting some canned pumpkin or sweet potatoe in it would be a good thing too.
I cant put her on yogurt because one of the medicines that she has it says no dairy. Any yes... he did have me put her on a diet of moist bland food. Science Diet I/D, but..... I am afraid to feed it to her anymore. Her stools have firmed up a lot and I dont want to constipate her. I will try the petroleum jelly. She has pooped two times today with no yelping. So it must be getting better. She does not produce much... but I think I read the medicine she is on said it helps slow down the intestinal activity.... which I take to mean she wont poop as much for a while. She is still licking her hiney a lot though. I figure it is just itching since when things heal they do itch. She is eating normally (as in a healthy appetite) and acting normally otherwise.
I appreciate everyones recommendations. I am a little gun shy since I have lost 3 dogs in 2 years. I lost my Kamikazi in May of 2005 from an intestinal block. I lost Gizmo's mommy, Cinnamon, 24 hours after she gave birth to 6 puppies due to a uterine infection from a puppy that did not make it to term. I gave away 5 of the puppies, 2 two my mom.... and one of those two passed on March 5. So I really am nervous about losing any more. Thanks again.
