I was woundering if anyone here had a dog with an enlarged heart? If so, what have you done to help? What do you feed them? Mine will not eat the percribtion dog food. The vet told me some things (people food) I can give her, just wanted some sugestions from you all. How long did your doggy make it after they were diaginosed? Just anything on this matter would be appreciated...Thanks
I did have many years ago. Never heard of a diet for an enlarged heart. What did he tell you is good & what is bad. I'm very curious about that.
My dog was at least 18ish when diagnosed, he also had CHF. He was on 3 meds daily, one was lasix for the CHF. One was enocard for the heart. At that time it was about $1.25 a pill. Cannot remember what the other one was.
Wow, my doggy is only 7 years old. She can not have anything with salt in it, so no reg dog food at all...It is a special diet dog food called m/d (very expensive) from the vet. She can have meats, and stuff, as long as there is no salt, but my goodness there is salt in everything. She is begining to not like anything really. She is on lasix, her tummy will fill up with fluids, so they have to drain her every so often, but the lasix seem to be working the past week and a half...Thanks Kasi
I had a 10 yo Newfie that had an enlarged heart due to Congestive Heart Failure and was on Lasix for 3 years. I lost him a year ago. He was never put on a special diet. Since your dog is also on Lasix, please please insist that your vet keeps an eye on potassium levels. I truly believe that is what my Newfie died from. The three years he was on the meds my vet never once did a blood test to check for any problems. My beloved baby died a horrible, painful death on my kitchen floor after he collapsed. He drank right up to the end, but was in a lot of obvious pain. I did not know then about Lasix and potassium depletion. So please insist on your vet checking this. Good luck.
