My 5 month old pup likes to eat mowed grass clippings. Every time I take her for her walk and we come up on any on a sidewalk, she will dive for it and try to grab a mouthful. With summer coming on, it's going to be hard to keep her away from it. Should I be concerned about her getting sick from it? She also loves to sniff out kitty poo. And there are alot of cats that like to use my yard and the surrounding area. The vet said it's a delicacy for some dogs. Does anybody else have this problem? I can usually get her away from it, but sometimes she beats me to it, then I can't hardly stand to open her mouth to get it out.
My dogs do the samething. I tell my dad they are out grazing. The cat poo thing is because it taste good to them. Cat food has more fat in it, and for some reason dogs think the kitty litter pan is their own personal smorgusbord
I'm hoping she will lose her taste for it, but I seriously doubt she will, the way she lunges for it. I guess I will just have to make sure she doesn't get it when I'm around. The last time she did it, I almost got sick to my stomach:) I was gagging all the way back to the house. Hopefully, none of the cats around here get any illnesses that could be passed on to her. On her walk today, she grabbed a mouthful of dry grass clippings and gagged herself. Good thing I had some bottled water. Maybe she'll stop eating that at least. Although, I'd rather she ate that instead of the other. Makes you think twice before you let her lick you! LOL
They say that dogs eat grass because they have an upset stomach. What kind of food is your dog on? Most people feed their dog with chicken being a main ingredient. I have read that lamb as a main ingredient will sometimes not agree with a dogs stomach. I know that if you feed a dog too much liver that it could have kidney problems. Just be careful what you feed your dog. I hope this was helpful. If feed my dogs with Nutro Natural Choice. It is a little expensive but really good for your dog. Blue Buffalo is a little less expensive but still very good for your dog.
You might want to limit the grass eating in other peoples yards. Since you don't know if they use chemicals on their lawns it might not be safe.
My beagle LOVES kitty "nuggets" which is totally gross in my book. Of course we keep the litter box out of her reach every once in a while she still gets some. Again I wouldn't allow this if you can prevent it in any way which is easier said then done.
Eating poo is normal. My dog does it all the time, I try to stop her, but she still sneaks it in.
There used to be a little girl who would walk past my house every day and pick grass to feed to Mollie. My dogs always "mow" the grass. They never throw up from it, so i don't think its an upset stomach. Their dogs, dogs are gross, lol. Don't worry about it too much, but keep an eye on her to make sure shes not eating something that could cause her harm.
I'm glad to see I don't have a freaky dog:) Nicole, we feed Tasha just regular Purina puppy chow. It doesn't seem to be bothering her. I don't think she's eating the grass because of an upset stomach. I think she just eats it because it's there. She will try to eat anything that is on her level if you don't watch her:) I usually get most of the grass out of her mouth before she swallows. Alot of the time she's just carrying it around. Maybe she likes the feel of it in her mouth. I'm just afraid she's going to choke on it, so I stop and "weedeat" my dog's mouth:) I'll be sure to start keeping her away from them, though. I guess I hadn't thought about chemicals from other yards. I've learned her signs really quickly on when she is on the trail for kitty surprises, so I can usually keep her away from it. I'm just glad to hear that she's acting normal. Like I said earlier, none of my other dogs seemed to do this. Kind of freaked me out. Thanks for all of your feedback and letting me know she's no different than most dogs.
