Me and my GF got a pug puppy about a month ago. He's currently about 18 weeks old. For the most part he's a great dog, but there are a few issues that hopefully he will outgrow.
Our biggest concern is housebreaking. It seemed to be going very well. Lately though it feels like he's been regressing. Having accidents in the house again and peeing in his crate. His schedule is:
6am: We take him outside to go and feed him
7:15am, we place him in the crate after taking him out once more and go to work.
1pm: My gf comes home on her lunch break and takes him out to go.
5pm: I come home, take him out and he's out for the rest of the night till about 10pm.
Lately though he's begun peeing in his crate. My gf comes home at 1 to find he's pee'd. He's only recently started doing this. Before this week he held it no problem. Any ideas why he's suddenly doing this? The space in the crate is only large enough for him to lay down, but he's on a doggie bed. Could the bed be soaking up the pee enough so he doesn't have to "deal with it"? Should we take the bed out so he's forced to deal with the mess he's made?
Any ideas on how to get him to stop this new and sudden behavior will be greatly appreciated.
Unless they are puppy mill dogs almost NO dog will ever use the bathroom in their kennels.
Take him for a vet visit and make sure nothing is wrong. Now make sure you are taking him out often enough, he is still a young dog. Now you have him in a small area of his crate to sleep, put his food there as well, only feed him in his crate. It's an unwritten rule of dogs, "Don't excrete where we eat."
I hope it works for you.
A cat by any other name... is still a sneaky little furball who pukes on the sofa.
