So in the past few weeks, I think Kuma's been going through a blowing phase???
He has never blown fur like you see in pictures/how other double coated breeds blow. As in, instead of clumps of fur falling out (I like to describe it as moldy-looking), he'll just be sheddier than usual and you can pluck out tufts of fur easily.
And lately, I don't know what the deal is, but he's lost most of his undercoat and is now in the process of shedding his outer coat as well. His normally beautiful, thick and full cinnamon roll tail has been reduced to a skinny donut. He looks skinnier than usual too because he's lost his fluffy undercoat padding.
Can this be a normal shedding cycle? He's also had an abnormal amount of dandruff (possibly due to the fact that he's lost so much fur in so little time??), and his rich, red color has faded into a sandy-tan sort of color. I've never seen him like this before!
Could it be because we moved to a really dry desert (Nevada) from Jersey? Should I start supplementing with oils?
the change in climate ( temperature, humidity levels, heat factor, etc ) could be playing a big part in his coat loss. i think shampooing , even with oils, can be even do more drying out of the skin. try adding a fish oil supplement to the food. i also love the skin-so-soft, by avon. it leaves a slight oil base to the skin and repels fleas too. a good quality food can also play a big part in a dogs skin and coat. i use natural balance potato and duck. i have noticed a big difference ( for the better ) since i have been feeding it to my dogs. its espescially great if your dog has allergies, which can also be a factor in the skin and coat.
If you are a dog and your owner suggests that you wear a sweater, suggest that he wear a tail.
After keeping show dogs in AZ, I have found a humidifier is a must for coated breeds. And having a room you can keep a lot cooler than the rest of the house for the dog is very benficial. Also it usually requires more bathing and conditioning. Loosing that humidity really effects the coats. I would also consider feeding a fish based food such as salmon. Or using a coat supliment in your regular food.
