Our 11 week old puppy has started humping. Of course we stop him, and after a few days he has realized he's not permitted to do that. However...all of a sudden he's humping everything he can get his legs around including a big ball, chair legs, and also rolls his blanket into a ball and humps that too! Is this normal? Am I supposed to stop this? I know your not supposed to let him do it to people...but to things? For all I know he's humping his blanket in the crate all night long!
o... i know it's normal for puppies to hump, but i havn't seen such a 'severe' case. lol. My dog started humping early too but stopped as soon as he got nuetered. Will you fix him? Mean while, stop him when you see him doing it.
Humping is not about sex, its a normal behavior that puppies in a litter will do to eachother more to see who they can manipulate. And find the more submissive puppies/pushy puppies. You shouldn't be punishing this behavior in any way, just redirect the puppy to something else and reward them for showing interest in other things. If you give them any attention for the behavior it may just escalate becasue the puppy is perceiveing it to be a reward of some kind.
I meant to add something, sometimes, puppies that are disouraged or scolded for humping will start doing it to objects, some beleive that it seems to be puppies that have low self esteem. So keep up with the training, lots of positive rewards, and avoid any scoldings.Lots of redirecting to activities that will get him praise, to build self esteem.
