My cat and I will be moving in with my new roomate soon and I would appreciate any suggestions on how to make this transition easy for my cat. My roomate's cat is young, has claws, and is outdoor/indoor. My cat is old, no claws and is strictly indoors. How can I warm them up to one another with no fighting? Also, How can I get my cat used to her new surroundings? What are some suggestions? I am most concerned about the two cats getting used to one another, and if my cat will be able to adjust to her new surroundings. Thank you, Kattie11
Isolate your cat in a room by itself. Let her get used to the new smells and sounds. Place familiar things in there with her. If you can, in your bedroom. She will feel safe sleeping with you. Keep the other one out of the bedroom. Then when the other cat is outside, let your cat explore. The resident cat will know there is another cat in the house. They can smell each other under the door. After a few days, let your's out on a supervised visit. If there is a little hissing, that is okay. Look for ears going back and hairs on end. If this happens, then put your's back into the room. Keep a towel handy in case, and throw it on the more agressive cat. A diversion to get your cat to safety. Be patient, it can take a couple of weeks. I foster for an animal shelter, and am always bringing strange cats into the house. This has always worked for me.
