After all of the NB recalls I switched to Solid Gold Barking at the Moon partly because it's completely grain free. However, it does have 42% protein and 20% fat where as NB Venison and Brown Rice had 22% protein. I am more confused now than ever. Is this particular formula of Solid Gold okay for Mason (maltese/toy poodle)? Or do I need to switch his food again??
I hope someone can please help me understand this better.
If your dog likes the food and is doing well on it, stick with it.
The food is high protein/high fat/low in simple carbs. That would be typical for a grain-free diet. Innova EVO is virtually the same (42/22) and Timberwolf's Wild & Natural is 36/18, pretty similar. Timberwolf also has other foods that are closer to the usual range of about 25% protein.
