Welcome to the world of Shihtzu's!! Our beloved Brandy used to have a very cheezy scent to her (even her face-"eyes") when her ears became dirty, sometimes it is an ear infection, other times they just need a good cleaning. Your vet has ear cleaners and flushes to give your baby- you might consider a weekly cleaning with a cotton ball and peroxide to help keep them clean, also if you have a good groomer (or the vet will do this) keep the hair in the ears removed- as when you clean the ears the hair will prevent from getting cleaned properly. I know with Brandy the hair actually trapped dirt in and caused her infections. That is one tip I now know with this little guy, we clean his ears weekly. best to get your little one to a vet, most likely a minor infection in both ears, they are prone to infections which is why they really do need weekly cleansings.

make sure you are keeping the shihtzu ear hair plucked out then clean [i like zap ear cleaner-no achohol in it] and then use a ear drying cream like r7 natural ear drying cream. clean ears 3 times a week [if not better after 3rd cleaning-then see vet] then wean down to 2 times a week then 1 time a week, pulling hair out at lease every 4 weeks. also if shihtzu has long ears put them up in a pony holder over his head... like while he eats so some air can get in. this really helped with my shihtzu-poodle mix. we now clean his ear about every 8 days--not a big deal and he loves it.
