For about two months now my dog has had very loose stools on and off. Two weeks ago it got to the point that it was just diarrhea. I took him to the vet and he put him on metronidazole and amoxicillin for five days. During that time it was firmer, but not back to normal. He finished the five days worth of meds two days ago and now it's back to being very loose. His fecal exam came back clean, no parasites (he takes interceptor). Does anybody know what could possibly be going on? I'm not trying to be gross by asking and I apologize, but I'm puzzled as to what is going on with him.
I am feeding him Chicken Soup for dogs. I asked the vet if I could feed him pumpkin and he told me that it would make the diarrhea worse b/c it was full of fiber. I have considered the raw diet and I would LOVE to feed him raw, but I don't think I'm skilled enough to feed raw. I actually got up the courage to attempt it once, but backed out b/c I thought I would not be giving him the proper amounts of certain things that he needs.
Phantom had bad diahhrea as a puppy and went to the vet several times, but they never had any idea what was going on. It finally cleared up when she got older. I wish I had known about different feeding methods then, but I just bought whatever said puppy and stuck with it. All her siblings died from parvo, so I was a nervous wreck when we would go to the vet, even though she hadn't been with them then and had her shots. It was so scary, I hope yours gets better.
I hate to hear that it is probably his food, but I kind of figured that was the source of the problem. Thanks to everybody for your input. My vet seems to think that he might just have a sensitive stomach, since this isn't the first time. It has been coming and going for a while. Does anyone know of a good quality dog food for sensitive stomachs which is also for large breeds?
canned pumpkin works for both diarrhea & constipation & be assured it works. I would get him on some dan active or activa daily. Chicken Soup is not bad but there are much better. I would go with a holistic food but introduce it slowly.
I would get him on boiled rinsed chicken or hambg & rice - 2/3 rice. You can add mashed sweet potatoe or pumpkin. Do that for at least 5 days & then gradually start him on whatever food you have selected
There is duck and turkey in it too, could he be allergic to one of those meats? Try getting a dog food with only one type of meat in it. My dog had the same problem as a puppy, and once we switched her food to chicken, she had normal poop again. good luck
I was thinking that I could feed pumpkin too,I have read that it was good for diarrhea or constipation. I wonder why my vet no. He said that it's good for constipation but only makes diarrhea worse. I have been feeding him plain yogurt.
