Well I know it is that time of year for most. I live in Arkansas so as soon as the weather starts to warm up we get fire ants and "fleas". I have been checking into a flea preventative. Sadie does not have fleas as of yet I have only picked 3 off of her, but I want to prevent a big infest of them.
So what does everyone use. I plan to treat the yard, but I am looking for one that goes on her and lasts all month. Any suggestions would be great!!
I have used Fronline Plus for years. Recently I started checking into others that might be more affordable. None stack up to Frontline! It also gets rid of ticks, which are rampant here (Nebraska). They come in from the pasture with 4-5 per every couple of inches! Yuck! Hope they're not that bad in Ark. Anyways, that's what I have found to be the best.
I think Revolution is great. I use it on my cats. I love it b/c you can use it on pregnant queens (we live on a farm), gets rid of fleas/ticks/ear mites, AND deworms!
Is the dog Revolution the same? Does it also de-worm/hearworm? If so, I might have to switch! Wait.... I think I remember why I didn't switch. Something about the flea life cycle. I think Frontline kills more stages of fleas. ie: adults, larvae, etc. I'll definitely have to look into it... AGAIN!
I feel sorry for the dogs that live in bad flea and tick areas of the country. I have my dogs on Program for fleas. They take it all year long even though the last time I saw a flea was five years ago. The last time I saw a tick was 25 years ago.
We use Sentinel for HW prevention and that also prevents fleas from reproducing on your dog. We don't have a big flea problem here (IL) and for the longest time I never saw a flea on him. The one time he did pick up fleas from a kennel, we used Capstar once and gave him several baths. Capstar is a pill that kills the fleas on your dog within hours, if not minutes, and lasts about 24 hrs.
My mom in FL uses Frontline on her two dogs and has been happy with it. She used to get the yard sprayed too, but I am not sure if she still does that. Only bad thing is that Frontline only works against ticks for one month versus three months against fleas.
The flea infestation has started here in SouthEast Georgia. I've already seen lots of them on the dogs outside, so I've bought some type of spray. I can't remember what it's called, but I'll be spraying the yard tomorrow. Phantom wears Frontline year round for fleas and we keep flea collars on some of the dogs. I can't wash Flat in Flea shampoo because she got a rash from it last time. Does anyone know what you can wash dogs in to kill fleas? I've heard Dawn mixed with salt, but I'm not sure that's right, sure would like to try it on Flat now.
I never heard of salt for shampoo, but many years ago I did have my house treated by a company that used a salt solution that he said was as safe as table salt for the dog and children who would be crawling and sitting on the carpet. Salt is bad for carpets (my brother owns a carpet cleaning business). I knew I could always get new carpet, but I didn't want my dog to stuffer from fleas and I didn't want my kids to stuffer long term from some posion. That was 14 years ago and the last time I saw a flea was when we got a new puppy five years ago, but they didn't infect our house or yard - knock on wood.
