But - I would still look at the facts and figures and say we aren't in a recession. I own my own business and work strictly off of internet sales, and business has never been better for me. Not bragging, but it's true. I realize that we are in a slowdown - different from a recession. Whether it is a politically correct thing or not, it's a fact that it isn't a recession. A definition is a definition. Yes, it stinks to not be able to spend money freely and carelessly, but that, IMO, is just being responsible. I have heard stories about people who are losing their homes, losing their cars. One friend in particular comes to mind, but then, after talking to her a little bit longer, she was way overextended in her credit card purchases - to the tune of $25K in debt with credit cards alone! Once her house payment started going up, she couldn't afford her high cc bills anymore. When the bill comes due, one has to be prepared to pay it. Same with people losing their homes. A great majority of them were purchased with these adjustable rate mortgages - which was all well and good while the rate was low. Now that the rate is going higher (which was inevitable), they are realizing that they can't afford what they signed a contract to pay. It all comes down to the decisions individuals have made, and it is all coming home to roost. I do have sympathy for those in a tough spot, but I also don't believe that I should be taxed more to cover their losses, or their careless choices.
