Like most folks, I have a job. When I work, they pay me. I pay my taxes and the government distributes my taxes as they see fit.
In order to get that paycheck, I am required to pass a random drug test, which I have no problem taking and passing. What I do have a problem with is the distribution of my taxes to people who don't have to pass the urine test. Shouldn't Welfare recipeints have to pass a urine test to get a check, since I have to pass one to earn it for them?
Please understand, I have no problem with helping people get back on their feet. I do, on the other hand, have a major problem with helping someone sit on their butt using my taxes to get high.
Could you imagine how much money the country would save if people had to pass a urine test to get a public assistance check?
An intelligent deaf-mute is better than an ignorant person who can speak.
As is the case with most topics, people are talking about things they know nothing about. Here is a little factual lesson:
In the 1960-early 90's there was a program called Aid to Families with Dependent Children commonly referred to as ADC-- or welfare. This guaranteed that people with children had a certain level of income to provide for their CHILDREN'S CARE. ****awful, I know****
Now people didn't like welfare because there was a MYTH that people were living off this and getting 'rich' by having more babies.
The truth was that they were merely existing in poverty. In 2002 a single mother with 1 child in Michigan received $386 per month. If they 'had another baby for more money' that was not very wise since they only received another $18 per month for a single mother with 2 children received $402 per month. Yes, they also COULD qualify for subsidized housing and food stamps. However, there are way too many families in MI needing subsidized housing, so not every one gets it.
So then you have a single mother of 2 getting $402 per month for rent, utilities, food, gas, clothing, diapers, and cleaning products. I couldn't live on that, could most of you with children?
Thanks to a republican congress and a certain William Jefferson Clinton (much too conservative for me), that all changed. The ADC program ended and was replaced by a new program called Temporary Assistance To Families in Need or (TANF).
Did you catch the word Temporary in that? That put a LIFETIME time limit of 5 years for people to get monetary 'welfare' benefits. After that some people 'can' get exceptions. That is normally mothers of handicapped children.
Some times mothers of handicapped children are NOT exempt. They have to go to work, while the state pays $15-20 per hour for some one to watch their special needs child so that they can go to work for MINIMUM WAGE. That is a great way to spend tax dollars. Taking mothers away from disabled children.
At this time there really IS NO WELFARE (as in money being given to able parents). Parents ARE REQUIRED TO WORK a minimum of 40 hours per week which is deducted from there $402 per month benefit. So do the math. They work, they don't get welfare money. If they don't meet work requirements they don't get welfare benefits. So barely ANY benifits are being given.
Don't think that 'oh my State is different, she doesn't know what she is talking about. So and so I KNOW is getting welfare'.
TANF is a FEDERAL program and these are FEDERAL GUIDELINES. Look it up for yourself. Chances are you just THINK your neighbor is getting something that they really aren't. Don't worry they probably are a lot poorer and needier than you really know. If it makes you feel 'BETTER' they really AREN'T getting anything to care for their family.
It always amazes me how some people can be so 'in tuned' and sensitive to the needs of animals-- yet care so little about humans.
I know THE POOR are easy targets because there are so few to dis-spell the MYTHS about the 'welfare system'. If people really were concerned about their tax dollars that wouldn't want to be fighting a war in a different country that is costing 100 MILLION dollars per day.
We are not only paying for this needless war, but so are our children, and our children's children.
Boxers are like cookies you can't have just one :)
As far as the drug screening aspect of 'assistance', so they test positive? What are you going to do with them? There are barely ANY residential drug treatment facilies any more because they were TOO expensive. We rather incarcerate drug users instead of treat them.
What would you do with the children of the 'users'? If they happen to somehow be getting their meager $402 per month in aid, and caring for their children, that is a lot less than if you take the children away and put them in foster care.
When their was 'welfare' we used to give mothers $402 to take care of their children, yet if the children were removed and placed in foster care, foster parents received $800-1200 per month to care for those same children.
Some times kids were better off in foster care, other times not. At least 25% of the foster parents I have met were in it for the money--- and it is not THAT much money to be 'made' because you are also supposed to be caring for the needs and expenses of the children in your care.
A lot of times it is bad all around, and there are not a lot of good solutions, because no one wants to really spend money on the poor.
Boxers are like cookies you can't have just one :)
Ali cat has a point, I didn't read all of it, but, I agree with Basset more. I hate the fact that people just sit on their butts getting paid. Want to argue with me? Try it, my dad did the same d**n thing. He wasn't even TRYING to look for a job, just living with his new girlfriend enjoying the free money that he was receiving. Total BS, the a*****hole, doesn't even have to pay child support...>:( GAH!
Here in Canada, we have subsidized living or welfare. Welfare would be for people with no means of income, and once they find a job, their pretty much out of luck. You have to go to meetings every week amd show that u are looking for a job, if u for some reason can't get a job , they will keep giving u money. Subsidies, would be the government paying a single mom (usually) to go to school. They provide housing for only a fraction of what a 'normal' person would pay. You can apply for subsidy usually if your under the normal pay bracket (10000 or less a year). A lot of people take advantage of the system.
A friend of mine gets $1000/month child tax for two kids. She pays $300 for rent and her schooling is being paid for by the government.
Geez, alicat, take a chill pill. No where did Basset_Lover say cut off all welfare. She put out a simple statement if you are doing illegal drugs no more welfare. Makes sense to me. As I have taught my children, "For every action there is a reaction." And so should the welfare recepients expect the same. I'm glad that there was welfare reform. Something is wrong with this country where we have feral youth running wild, reproducing more feral youth. The out of wedlock birth rate is rampant in the poorest of neighborhoods and the segments of population who can afford it the least. Alicat save your next rant and rave. It's all my fault, because I'm male, I'm white and conservative/libertarian.

I like him a lot better than I like most people. To you he's a dog. TO me he's an adopted son who is short, hairy, walks on all fours and doesn't speak clearly. I have no problem with any of these. <
I used to have a friend who's mother had 4 children. She never worked a job in her life. She lived off wellfare and food stamps. (Still of course had money for her cigarettes and alcohol). Why in the bloody heck should I have to pay for HER to sit on her BUTT all day?
The wellfare system doesnt work. The people that actually need it dont get it, because they "make too much money". When in reality they are getting minimum wage.
"We are not only paying for this needless war, but so are our children, and our children's children." And seriously. get a clue lady. I didn't know preventing another 9/11 was needless. Go ask the soldiers in the war if they think its needless. Go ask the families of over 3,000 Americans that died on 9/11 if they think its needless.

I don’t pretend to know anything about how the welfare system works in my state, but I do know that over the years I have rented property to “section 8” recipients and I got paid directly by the government every month like clock works. It is a lot more the $400. I currently have one tenant that I rent a 4 bedroom house for $1,400 a month for the last three years. The government pays me $1,340 per month and the tenant pays only $60 a month and she have problem even paying that much. Maybe the fact that she does not work and always seems high or drunk whenever I see her has something to do with that. She also gets food stamps and assistant from her church. she gets at least $2,000 on rent, food stamps and cash each month, and that does not include the cash, clothes, food and other stuff she cons her church in to giving her. On several occasions I got a $60 check for the remainder of the rent from her pastor. She is also getting Medi-Cal which is like Medicare for California for herself and her kids. Even though she lives with a man she refers to as her husband who does work and get paid cash daily they are not officially married. The only reason they are not married is so she can keep leaching of society. By my calculations, when you take in to account all the benefits she gets, their combined income is $3,500-$4,000 a months which is tax free as far as I know. I could definitely live off that.
So say what you will about the laws, people obviously find ways to screw the system and live off it. If we as a society have to help those people, the least they can do is pee in a cup once a month before they get a check.
If I seem to have a superiority complex, it is because you make it so easy.
I still completely agree with basset lover, and everyone else that agrees with her, as well. I can see if the person tries and gets a job, some do, but majority..it just ticks me off. This country is screwed up in so many ways..lol
Right on Basset, Nicole, Riley and Irish. Believe it or not, some people actually get welfare that have no business getting welfare, what a concept! Illegally receiving something you are not entitled to! There are people whos only goal in life is to see what they can get for nothing.
Yes there are people who need welfare, too bad politicians spend more money on "fact finding trips" then they do on what really counts.
People have cheated since time began and they will continue disgusting!!!
here in canada they were thinking aout fingerprinting people on welfare, that would be alittle to much,as for paying for school, they have to pay it back when they get a job,im not on welfare but would only get it if i needed it and wouldnt mind peeing in the cup, bloodwork or hairsample.
The welfare system in this country is very screwed up right now. Did you know in PA to qualify for medical assistance you have to make less than $450.00 a month? That eliminates a lot of people right off the bat. I know of several people that have been waiting to get CCIS (subsidized child care) for 3 years now. The waiting list for section 8 apartments is as high as 2 years in some places. I get irritated because I could probably very easily collect welfare benefits. I am an unmarried mother going to school. I work my butt off to provide for my daughter and do what I have to do. I will skip on necessary things for myself so that I can provide her with the things that other kids are not lucky enough to have. I kind of feel like if you can work, you should work. The problem is too many people take advantage of the system and ruin it for everyone else. Don't get me wrong though. I think welfare is a good concept, it is just poorly run.
lol, you should have moved to Alberta last year! Every person, big or small got a $400 cheque from the government, my friend got $1600, for her whole family! Child tax benefits all depend on your income, when my mom was single with me, she only got $75 from the government...she made too much money. But then I have a friend that makes at least $700 off her kids child tax. Yes, subsidized housing is hard to get into. Its usually only for people with families/kids, and for some reason, people with better credit go before others. You can also call and get info from the government, and they might be able to place you in an apartment/townhouse that isn't deemed subsidized housing, if you end up on the waiting list for too long.
I am fortunate enough to have a very supportive mother. But I know of a lot of people who don't have that and are forced to scrape to get by. The good credit score is something I don't understand. I am not generalizing everyone, but for the most part, if you are unfortunate enough to be in a situation where you need government assistance, I can't imagine that you would have an excellent credit score. They should go by who needs it the most, not who was the most responsible with their visa card. I know I get a nice refund check every year because of the child tax credit as well. There is also a school credit I can collect. Those are always a nice surprise for me...lol. I always feel sorry for people who see that being counter-productive is a good way to live life. I would hate to live everyday feeling like I have not done anything to better myself.
i agree to some point. First I have to say I personaly know people who abuse the system. I dont care what ali has to say. I know a lady that sits on her butt all day, she was kicked out of army boot camp because of drugs. The government pays for her to go to school, they pay child care (on weekends they pay for someone to watch her kids so she can party), she gets food stamps, and welfare. They give her enough to live on and more. She gets enough money to pay rent, her cay payment, new clothc for her and the kids, pot, go out friday night-sunday night drinking,And more. She gets so much in food stamps that she buys for her friends as well as her self.
I was told my a lady that works at DFS I should apply for food stamps, I was preg and applying for MC+, that we would get some. I said I dont need it no. she said everyone eals abuses the system if you qualify you qualify. I dont even see how we could have gotten them hubby made $11 a hour then witch is decant money.
the people I know that get money, food stamps, and other stuff eather get it for a month or 2 during hard times or have gotten it for years. I know a lady who has been on it for over 20 years. My mom was for 16, the lady I talked about above has been on it for 12 years i think. As soon as each of them had a kid they ran crying for help and have been on it sence.
Now i do agree that if your sitting around on drugs and stuff you should collect from the government, but they should force them into rehab or something to try to help them instead of leaving them on there butt. If they go stright back to drugs and/or drinking. so be it cut them off at least we tryed.
I'm gonna trade this life for fortune and fame I'd even cut my hair and change my name
