Starting next month I will be workind a 9-5am shift. The only thing I'm worried about is my dog... Im not sure if I should change his sleeping time too or what I should do. While im at work i'll assume that he will be sleeping. But what happens when I sleep during the day? Does anyone have similar situation and can give some advice? Thanks!
When you get home in the morning, what time will you wake up? lol, on weekends I usually come home at 4am, let the dogs out and go to sleep. I'm not usually up until at least 1pm, and the dogs sleep with me the whole time. I don't think it will be a problem, just remember to let him out before you go to bed.
when i worked nights i found it difficult to go to sleep right after i came home. i was usually up for at least an hour or more unwinding. you may want to consider taking your dog for a nice longish walk when you get home. that way he/she will be tuckered out and more likely to sleep during the day.
consdering that your average pet dog sleeps a total of 22 hours a day, i doubt your work hour change will make a huge impact on him.
Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.
I do shift work. Every month I change my hours. It seems the dogs just seem to pick right up. They are awake when I am awake. They sleep with me when I sleep. They probably wont even notice the time of day it is as ong as you still spend time with them. Keep everything else as normal as possible.
If they are closer to you they will probably automatically change their schedule to suit yours. Mine do for my schedule. They love my husband, but I know I am their favorite. One thing to keep in mind though. When I play with the dogs at 2 or 3 in the morning, I have to do so in the farthest part of the house as possible. They sometimes get noisey and I dont want to wake my husband. We sleep in seperate beds in seperate rooms because of my constant changing of shifts and my sleeplessness on some nights. I usually will play with them in my room with the door closed.
I too, change shifts...I am on a nite shift rotation so I can actually enjoy the summer and do some stuff, as the afternoon shift is 2p-10p and it kills the weekends. (on afternoon shift, I only get one weekend off a month and when we are max staffed, one weekend off every 5 wks)
Yeah, it blows.
so, every so often I go to nite shift....I dont feel bad about it, as when I was on afternoons, the dogs just slept till I went to work anyways. And they are bull terriers, loaded with energy, but total sofa slugs.
They adjust...so dont worry.
Cinnamon....I hear ya on the sleepless nites...I am a nite person and hate waking up to an alarm clock, I can stay awake all nite and on my days off, I find it really hard to sleep all nite.
Stitch, our therapy dog, sleeps with my hubby all nite and with me when I get home....its kinda nice! the other two do the crate thing. He has slept with Lilo and Stitch before, but Nani would never let us sleep.

My body is a die hard midnighter, even if days and afternoons are what I have to work nowadays.
I did midnights for years....I have to unwind, shower, etc when I would get home. Let the dogs out, play with them, then when I went to bed, they raced in and under the covers to sleep with me. Shift cahnge never seemed to effect them much, they are always more than happy to crawl in bed and sleep any time I am.
People are like slinky's, not really good for much. But its still fun to push them down the stairs.
phew! I feel a lot better after knowing im not the only one who does night shifts and that my dog will adjust well. For sure will take tired him out after I come home so he can sleep again : ) Thanks guys!
I work nights too, like LPN it is just more natural for me, the dogs sleep all day with me, all night while I'm at work, and they are usually here at work with me too, then mos tof the evening too. The only thing that upsets them is if I dont bring them to work.
LOL ruffian - You bring yours to work with you too? lol. I have two jobs and cant bring them to one of them ... yet. I am working on getting into a program to be able to go into hospitals or in nursing homes. When they are finished they can come to work with me at the hospital, I have already spoken with my boss about it there. At the gym, I am already allowed by my boss to bring them in. I only bring them on Fridays though. They love it. I am on the list for the next session of training for them.
Well.... my primary job is a nurse. And to bring the dog to the hospital, I have to have it certified as a companion/therapy dog. To do that they have to pass obedience and temperament classes and testing.
My other job is at a gymnastis gym. I work in the office there. It is a small family owned operation. We only have about 30 employees. My boss was great and when Cinnamon died, she let me bring the puppies to work everyday since she knew I coulf not afford not to work and I also could not leave the puppies at home alone. So everyone at the gym has watched gizmo grow up since litteraly the day she was born. Gizmo is VERY well socialized because of this...lol.
