I have had my kitty for a year. She has always went potty in her litter box. This past month she has been peeing and pooping in my spare room!!! The carpet in there is like a shag type carpet and it is getting ruined. I changed litter to the sand type and she pooped in their one day then the next in the play room. I change the box once a week and scoop it out every other day. I sometimes change it twice a week. THere have been times when it was COMPLETELY clean and she went to pee in the other room! I don't know what to do anymore. My vet said I could buy this plug in (like the glade ones) that releases a horomone in the air that will make her not want to go in there. It is $45 and I didn't want to buy it yet. Anyone have any suggestions on how to keep her from doing this? I put her in the laundry room today to keep her from going in there. My only idea is to replace the carpet with a laminate floor or re-home her. And I definately do not want to do that. She is the nicest kitty, I just don't know why she is doing this. My puppy has peed in there before, could she be doing it because the dog had and smells it? I have cleaned the carpet with EVERYTHING and even had it professionally shampooed, but that didn't really work either.
Have her checked at the vet for UTI, suddenly stopping using the litter box is usually a sure sign. If she has crystals you need to get her on nutra-vet cranberry powder ( I think thats the name of it ) Let me know and I will give you the addy of a supplier.
A UTI would cause her to pee and poop in the other room? I don't know why that would make her not use her box! The vet said she could be marking her territory. I was not aware female cats do this. He said nothing about a UTI or wanting to check for one.
poppy, I have 21 rescue cats, trust me, if they suddenly stop using the litter box, UTI is usually the culprit, unless there have been any major changes in the house that may have upset her, or she is being bullied when she uses the litter box.
I suggest you keep her out of the room, clean the spots, and leave it to dry. It would not hurt to get the vet to check her urine for crystals, (remember if she blocks it can kill her within 8 hours) If all else fails and it is not crystals put her in a large dog crate for a week with food water and litter box, you can bring her out for cuddles but she has to go straight back in, that should cure it if it is just marking.
Thanks a lot Flip. There have been some house changes. My mother used to come to my house everyday to watch my daughters while I am at work. So someone was ALWAYS home and not to mention the kitty's playmate my chihuahua. Well now the girls and my dog have been going to my mom's house during the day. So she has been home alone. But it started a little before this, so I will definately make her an appointment with the vet. Thanks for your help!
Poppyryce-since she has been both peeing AND pooping outside the litter box, it's probably not a UTI. If she were ONLY peeing outside the box, that's what I would suggest. But since she's doing both, she probably either doesn't like the litter pan for some reason, or doesn't like the location.
The litter pan-it might be that she doesn't like the litter-either the texture of it, or the smell (if it's scented) or the liner, if you use litter pan liners. If you use a covered pan, she might prefer one without a cover. The pan might be too small or too deep.
Or, she might just not like the location of the pan.
Now, if she were ONLY peeing outside the pan, but using it to poop, if could be a UTI if she is squatting and using the carpet. It could also be renal failure or anxiety/emotional problems. But if she is always peeing on the same surface, my guess would be that she either doesn't like the location of the pan, or doesn't like that type of litter.
If she is peeing on vertical surfaces, it could be anxiety or marking.
And finally, if she were only POOPING outside the pan, it could be constipation, colitis or arthritis.
But after ruling out any medical problem, I would start by changing both the type of litter and the location of the pan-maybe even buy a new pan of a different type to see what happens.
Thanks Catlover. I have a vet appointment this weekend. Yeah I was confused as to why she pooping and peeing! I have changed her litter to the sand like kind. Before it was a rocky kind. So I will try that and then try changing pan and location. THANKS
