my dog has dry skin
my pit bull has really bad dry skin he is flaking and has scratched so much hes scratched sores and scratched some hair off does anyone know what i can do for this problem

First make sure your dog doesn't have fleas. If your dog isn't on a topical flea medication like Advantix or Frontline plus, that's what you need to put the dog on. Give the dog a bath in an antimicrobial shampoo like sulfoxydex, you can buy it from your veterinarian.

Put neosporin ointment on the dog's sores 2-3 times aday and keep it close so you can stop it from itching/scratching for about 20-30 minutes after application.

Finally, add a teaspoon of fish oil or flax seed oil to your dog's food once daily.

Also if her kibble has corn or wheat in it get her kibble without it. Innova, Blue Buffalo, Pinnacle, Canidae. Natural Balance, Artemis, are just a few of the better brands.

My terrier did nothing but itch on Iamms, Science diet, Eukanuba. I changed his food, and it was the problem for him.
Whoever said you can't buy happiness, must have never owned a dog!!!!!!!!!!!

If he doesn't have fleas, it may be allergies. A lot of dogs have terrible allergies. And allergies in dogs usually manifest themselves as skin problems. You can give benadryl until the other treatment gets the symptoms under control. Ask your vet how much to give him. If the allergy treatment doesn't work. The vet may have to see if he has a hormone imbalance.

Sounds like either allergies or mange

What type of food are you feeding?

When did it start?

How often are you bathing the dog?

when i used to live in monterrey mexico, i learned a wierd thing that could take away what thay called ronia, when the hair of the dog falls out and the skin starts cracking, i cant seem to remember the english term for it, but they would bath the dog first and then cover them in motor oil taken from and oil change and leave it on for a bout two days and bathe them then reaply until it would go away, if it was really severe they would first put on the oil then clean car grease. Wierd but it worked.
I'd rather have a doller in my pocket and a dog by my side.

No one takes my dollar and a dog is always there happily wagging his tail no matter what happens.

I have family in Mexico and they also suggest putting raw egg through my daughter's hair when she has nightmares. Doesn't mean I would do it. What you are talking about is mange. The dog could possibly lick the motor oil or grease off of his body and die. There are far more treatment options out there than this one.

That motor oil thing is a bad way to go. The dog can get sick from ingesting the oil. Like the above poster said. if its not allergies, its either mange or ringworm. Have a skin scraping done, if there are any sores on its face or head. If its hind quarters, usually hot spots. But no motor oil.
We had a pit bull brought into our rescue that had been dunked in oil. It did not cure it anyways. She needed lengthy mange treatment.

If I were you I would take him to the vet, so he can get meds for it to help heal it up, and get some flea tick prevantative stuff, and heart worm ones to. I would also try giving him a bath, with doggy shampoo, not human shampoo, because that will only make it worse.

My dog which is pit bull/boxer mix had the same problem. She would scratch herself in the same spot until she bled. I took her to the vet numerous time and they would take her a bath which was called "medicated bath." It didn't help. They said she had skin allergies. I started using oatmeal soothing shampoo when taking her a bath as ever since she has grown her hair back. I also take her a bath every 2 days when I notice her starting to scratch again.

OMG...please do NOT put motor oil on your dog!
The other advice is very good, may want your vet to do a skin scraping for allergies to be on the safe side before putting alot of money out to trying other things.
People are like slinky's, not really good for much. But its still fun to push them down the stairs.

I would say fleas, mange, allergy to fleas, allergy to food, or environmental allergy. Putting motor oil on your dog? Yuck... doesn't sound safe at all to be putting that on your dog, especially used oil..I'm sure it's got a lot of toxic things in it. I'm sure it kills the mites because it's so toxic.. but it could probably kill the dog too

Have you taken this dog to the vet? There are so many causes for this condition, it would be hard to name them all. How old is the dog, by the way?
I'm afraid I would consider covering a dog with used motor oil abuse.

I wouldnt even use clean motor oil.
People are like slinky's, not really good for much. But its still fun to push them down the stairs.

lpn, the only reason I said 'used motor oil' is because the advice came from a posting stating they used oil from an oil change. I agree with you totally that no kind of motor oil should be used on a dog, used or otherwise.

Brianna: your dog sounds like it may have a type of mange. I recommend a trip to the vet for a skin scraping. As was suggested though, dry itchy skin can be caused by a number of things..... diet, allergies, mites, frequent bathing, etc....Any more info you could share with us?

Just to let ya know. The other day on animal planet, there was a case with a horse. Things were said about using motor oil on the wounds. The animal cops said the oils can leach into the wounds, and can cause liver and kidney problems from the toxic junk in the oil. Enough said. No motor oil.
O.P. did you bring your dog into the vets, if so what was it?

I have 3 yokries and ran into a problem with my oldest yorkie. She had very dry skin. I tried different medicated shampoo with oatmeal and etc. I took her to the vet and the vet gave me fish oil pills. They seemed to work but she hated the pills. I took a chance on changing her food.BAM fixed her coat. I give her nutro dog food and her skin problems are a thing of the past.

A lot of very good advice has been given and hopefully the dog is doing better now. One thing that wasn't mentioned though is giving the dog a fish oil supplement. Your vet can see you one that's appropriate for your dogs weight. The brand we sell is Dermacaps, there are also 3V capsules. They basically provide a fatty acid supplement that will help moisturize the dog's skin. They are good to use no matter what the skin problem is, whether it be fleas, mange, ringworm, allergies, or infection. A good diet will have extra fatty acid supplements in it, but some dogs just need a little more.
