My sister just had a baby girl on Saturday morning. She's the cutest thing ever. She came home from the hospital Monday. I've been letting my dog smell the baby's clothes that need to be washed so she can get used to the smell first. Then we have been introducing the baby slowly to her, like for example one of us will sit with the baby in our arms and let my dog see her. To be honest Bracken is not too fussed over the new edition. Its only when the baby cries that Bracken gets a bit frightened. Does anyone have any suggestions of what else I can do?
Sounds like you're doing everything I've heard to do. Just make sure he knows that the baby is part of your pack now, and the baby has a higher rank than the dog. To let him know, just have an air of authority when you are handling the baby and when you let the dog start to sniff the baby. Rather than fear, be thinking in your head 'This baby belongs to me, Grrr!' Sounds hilarious, but it really helps for you to put out the right body language.
I definitely don't believe in keeping baby and dog separate unless there is danger. That would just make the curiosity, power play thing worse. Good luck, it sounds like you're doing the right things! Oh and Congrats on the baby!
Thanks huskyseehuskydo, I'll have to try that and see what happens. I was also thinking of putting the baby monitor in the kitchen where Bracken sleeps so she can get used to the baby crying. I've been giving her lots of treats when the baby is around too, so she will associate the baby with something good. I think she'll be fine with the baby, its just something she needs to get used to I suppose.
