My mothers GSD mix was deemed a dangerous dog after her third biting incident. She wasn't really mean - but we think that she may have had eye problems because she only attacked people in dark clothes or skin tones. Anyway, AC came out after she bit a child on the bottom and my mother surrendered the dog to them. The parents didn't press charges after they put her down. My mother was crushed, though, that her dog bit a child (not mauled, just bit) and has sworn to never own another dog because of it. I told her that it wasn't her fault - the dog had jumped through a screened window while she was shopping.
When my pit mix was involved in a dog fight she bit the guy that was hitting her and he required stitches. After AC came out and heard the story he told the guy that he was lucky that we weren't pressing animal abuse charges against him so he dropped it. She wasn't considered a dangerous dog, however. (Part of which may have been because she was sitting on the porch when he showed up and practically licked him to death before he could knock on the door!)
So a person protecting his dog in a dog fight, was told that he was lucky that charges were not pressed against him? Where were you during this dog fight? Why were the dogs fighting?
I would use what ever means necessary if a dog was attacking my dog. My dogs are not out, or loose, and if they are with me they are leashed. My dogs aren't starting anything, but I would get hurt to protect them from a dog aggressive dog.
Boxers are like cookies you can't have just one :)
alicat1 - The situation with the dog fight went like this: I was at work, my dog was on MY property in the country where there are no leash laws and she NEVER left our property. A neighbor brought his lab (without a leash) and let her run around. According to witnesses (5 people) his dog attacked mine first, on my property then he proceeded to beat my dog - hit, punch, kick etc. If she had really wanted to hurt him or his dog she would have, BUT she was only defending herself. That is why the AC told the guy that he was lucky. HE was in the wrong!! My dog would have NEVER attacked another dog (or person) if not provoked, and he could tell just by walking up to the house.
